Why would all intel users in the world pay loyalty to Apple? Is USB really a huge "technology breakthrough" that deserves this much credit?

By not charging money for USB, Apple can encourage more USB product on the market. In the long run, that's what Apple really wants.

  6. Price Hike on SuSE 7.0 · · Score: 1

As a paying user of SuSE for more than two years, I'm very disapointed about this news. I'm sure none of the experienced SuSE users want to buy the "Home user" version. In that aspect, the price hike is unacceptable. Sure. I have a dual oc-3 backbone that I never have to worry about download time, but I am not willing to USE and hence PROMOTE SuSE under this "Power user scam."

...Especially after dealing with so many problems including wordperfect, real audio, acrobat reader, netscape's strange behavior and random crashes. These all appear on the SuSE boxes regardless of our effort to download the latest software. The redhat boxes have no such problems.

... The king is dead; long live the king.

  7. Some more serious problem with SuSE. on SuSE 7.0 · · Score: 1

In a recent project, me and four other linux programmers tried to install XFree4.0 from Suse's instruction - it doesn't work. Even from a fresh install, it doesn't work. (At least it doesn't work when we follow thier instruction. I didn't bother to try more and simply bought the new video card.)

On another note. SuSE seems to have "chronical" problem in some unknown lib. This is why we can't get netscape to display color at www.fileangel.org on a SuSE machine. Wierd thing is, the new Netscape even displays Flash without a problem.

I have run SuSE since 5.2, transfered from the stuborn libc5 Slackware. There are quite a few other problems:

    - Acrobat reader (from thier distro) never works. I have never bothered to try compile it but some told me they don't even compile on a SuSE.
    - Wordperfect never works. Period. So many people got disasterous result for trying to fix it.
    - RealAudio also never works.

For the above reasons, I can't recommand SuSE to a Windows newbie. (How will they live without Acrobat, realaudio, wordperfect...) I still use SuSE because of all the other wonderful things it has: the clear configuration. The huge selection. The excellent manual. Most of all, every GUI configured file is seperated from hand-configurable files and they are clearly marked. Good job. (So please, you guys, fix this. I paid for every install.)

Another complain: On the box set, I expect a bootable live filesystem "rescue" CD. They do not include it anymore and state that we can purchase these CDs from thier site. Well, they never even mention it on the web site.

  12. WAP senarios on WAP Under Fire · · Score: 3

I have studied on WAP at work for a month. Here's what I find:

Dispise the fact that WAP protocol has a lot of problems others listed, telco have no time to wait to push the products into the market. It's the next piece of pie to fight for.

A WAP phone is not used like your netscape on a PC. But it is useful for circumstances where you don't have a PC or a palm with you. For instance, if you have a WAP enabled wrist watch, you can set it to alert you when something important happens. The one I'm working on is the fileangel project at www.fileangel.org which will let you choose to be contacted when something happens to your file via a WAP device. Another example is that you can set up your program to call you on your WAP phone when your stock price is at a certain level and prompt you to buy/sell. It can prompt you to read an email when a certain important email is recieved. These things are related to real-time communication applications. I feel that it is quite useful.

As of whether WAP is a temporary technology, it depends. Sure, displays are getting better, CPUs are getting smaller and less power consuming, but things are shrinking at the same rate. For example, maybe one day we will be able to carry a watch, or a pen, which acts as a phone, pager, emailer, voice recognizer, digital camera, scanner, GPS and mp3 player ALL at once.

Or maybe one day we will stick this wearable screen on top of one eye and get all of the previoes example's features, plus a full-size, see-thru screen. (How ever playing movies out of our penny sized CD storage?)

The point is, there is no end to our need for smaller, more powerful devices. There is a chance that WAP may survive.

By the way, they have a $50 dollars off the $200 dollars life time subscription program ending the end of this month. You can get a serial number from one of the tivo advocate sites.

Lastly, a comment: First we saw i-opener being hacked, now that Tivo is getting hacked. I am not sure if this is a good thing for linux. It gives the industry an example: "Do anything with them Linux, you'd be hacked silly."
Of course we know that it isn't that simple, but not many people understand it.
