Why can't you BE A MAN and say, "OK, the government's highest tax rate is Y; but I want X, so let me go out and make X/(1+Y)."
But you can't. So instead, you just sit there and whine about tax rate.
Quit whining. Philip Glass, the master of contempo minimalist music drove a Taxi in new York City for over a decade. Was he unproductive? No. Paul Erdos, the great Mathematician whose work created the field of Graph Theory and generally regarded as the most prolifit Mathematician since Euler, had no bank account, no house, no job. Was he unproductive? No. In fact, graph theory is widely used in computer Science so he was way more productive than you. Your MickeyD drive through servers are all making 5 bucks and hour and what will happen if they all quit today?
You are reading slashdot. This forum was created by two young kids in thier early 20's. They were not making much money when they started. Just a few years ago, people would post comments like, "Rob, quit drooling at the toys and get a real job!" But were they "unproductive?" Yahoo is created by grad students in school. They weren't getting paid, were they unproductive?
You have never been down and out before, and that is why you have to whine like a loser. A true winner will never whine, even if he's making nil. Truth is, many extremely successful people have been homeless or poor. They will eventually become successful when something starts to click.
Why do you think you can measure people's intelligence and productivity with thier salary? If that was the case, then Larry Wall was not very productive when he started writing Perl because no one paid him. Linus Torvald is not even 1/100 time as productive as Ricky Martin. Did they whine about taxes? No. Because they are winners. Microsoft cannot buy these people, because they know their self worth cannot be measured with money.
Some people will never satisfy. Why can't you be thankful that you have good parents, good luck and that you have a nice paying job. You are not starving and why are you crying like a baby. You have a roof on top of you, be thankful. You have access to a computer, be thankful of that, too. Quit whinning.
You remind me of Tom Cruise in that film "Rainman." This guy got a good report card, showed it to his dad, and demand that his dad let him take his car out for a ride "because I deserve it." Then he left home and 20 years later after his father died, he "demand to have half of the estate." Because? he deserves that, too.
American's tax rate is not quite as high as that of European. If you want, you can move to Hong Kong or other extremely capitalised country.
Wrong. the money is not wasted, it's just multiplied. (each dollar that is loaned can be loaned again at a smaller amount, the smaller amount depends on the federal reserve. this is called the multiplier effect.) As long as the banking system is healthy, this does not post too big of a threat to the economy. The gov cannot control people's spending habit. If the gov tries to do something dramatic, like changing the fed reserve rate, there is no doubt that the economy will immediately go to recess.
The rise of the Internet has created a new social class. This "high-tech" class is highly demanded in the labor market. In fact, there seems to be a shortage in the IT industry.
However, because there is a initial investment (a computer), children from low-income class have little chance of being introduced to the Information industry. This is a social problem because it is a waste of human resources and it magnifies inequality. What will you do about it?
To understand the true effect of the internet, one must be familiar with it. My question is: How often did you use the internet in the 90's? During the 90's, how many protocols have you used besides HTTP? (the web) Have you visited a pronography site? Have you played a violent video game? Have you visited some of the anarchist web sites?
Of the above questions,
If your answer is "No", then why do you think you qualify to make comments about them? If your answer is Yes, Please tell us how these contents affect your values and behavior.
You are probably not a programmer. Any programmer can tell you that working more hours != getting the job done faster than working less.
a human brain can only process that much in a given day. It doesn't matter if you dit in front of the table and hack your ass off, you will not produce.
however, it might be different in IT fields, such as system administration.
So you mean, you will vote for a complete moron who has the conservative value that you dislike, instead of voting for a guy that has a wife who has the conservative value that you dislike.
The biggest blow up in govn't size is during the 8 years Regan administration. That's Republican for you.
This whole topic is a flambait, but more importantly it shows which distro is the "script kiddie distro" -- no doubt, judging from the script kiddie attitude in the posts, Slackware it is.
Look, I started out using Slackware in my early year, and I have never even touched redhat. But what distro you use have very little to do with anything. I have a friend who wrote a few dozen drivers, was on the cover of linux journal 3 years ago for his smart card drivers for linux, and he now uses Mandrake. Now which one of you Slackware script kiddies have the guts to come out and dismiss him because of his choice of distribution? You probably can't because he ran Slackware from the early years and he simply got tired of hand-compiling and installing everything himself.
The CEO of TurboLinux started a flambait. Big deal. Slashdot need not propagate it, especially not with another script kiddie's flambait.
First, I'd like to say that these type of live filesystem CDs were started back in Slackware 3.x and most distros canceled the live filesystem CD ever since. These are very useful for short term recovery and hardware evaluation.
Second. I have been using SuSE since version 5.2. I am very disappointed about thier "Professional" vs. "normal user who don't even use development tools to compile programs" bullshit. This is an outragous price hike. In the past, I have always purchased the hard copy version of SuSE, even for the ones that I installed over the net. But frankly this "upgrade" "professional" "personal" bullshit is unacceptable.
SuSE always tries to stop people from downloading thier distro over the net.
Technically, SuSE has some long standing issues. The latest one (6.4) that i purchased started to have horrible lib problems. Things like Acrobat reader and realaudio NEVER works. I followed thier instruction in version 6.4 and on thier web site to install XFree4 and everything crashes and burns. I'm sick of it's lib problems.
SuSE has lost me as a long term customer. They can shove that "professional upgrade" #$@@%^..
When I do a re-install, I re-install the whole thing, I'm not "professional upgrading" it. period.
I'm moving to another distro. either Debian, Slackware, FreeBSD, or maybe Mandrake. (However I'm not sure if I can stand terms like DiskDrake.)
Not just Unix developing companies are interested in Linux geeks. I worked at Schlumberger Austin Product Center, IT advanced technology group this summer. All but one (that is the web master) CS interns and summer pooling students are Linux geeks. We wrote everything in Linux. In fact, they bought us brand new computers and we wiped the NT drive and installed linux. It was awesome.
My buddy is signing a contract with them writing in-house Linux stuffs, too.
When I looked for the intern, IBM's CAD developing group in NY also was looking for UNIX people writing TCL/Tk stuffs under AIX.
I'm not a Mac fan, but In apple's defense, I think it's very important for apple to ask vendors to be uniform in hardware and software. The reason is, it's DAMN EASY to write/configure software if you know exactly what hardware you are dealing with. After all, Apple is for people who don't wanna get a clue about thier graphics chipset.
You must be kidding me. Where exactly do you base that on? I worked in the graphics design industry.
Anyone in the graphics design business knows that the first choice of vector graphics software is Macromedia Freehand and Adobe illutrator. The best publishing software in QuarkXpress. Raster: Photoshop.
Cost of spending 100+Million writing IE to throw off netscape.
Cost of over paying top programers to do dumb GUIs in order to suck talents out of the cometitor's hands.
Cost of buying out small companies to kill competition.
Cost of buying a big chunk of Macintosh.
Cost of top lawyers and lousy video producers to defend lawsuits and file for random Patents.
If companies like Macintosh, BeOS, QNX can charge lower price for an OS, why can't Microsoft?
Maybe Gradma and Steve the jock can use Macintosh instead of Windows?
Here is a little economics lession. If your Windows2002 cost you $1000. Suppose that you work for $10 an hour. Suppose it takes you 100 hours to learn how to install linux and type email and use StarOffice. Assume that besides Windows, you need to buy utilities such as "Norton's disk keeper", "Guard Dog", "WinGate" for $1000 dollars. These utilities come free with unix distributions.
What is the rational choice? Linux. because you save $1000 dollars that way. I'm not saying that these numbers are realistic. I'm saying that OSes are simply commodities, like any other commodities, there is a substitution effect. Any economist will tell you monopolistic market charge higher price than free market.
For example. Seinfield has a joke that talks about how he thinks laudry detergent advertisement are stupid because these ads talk about how effectively the detergent can wash away blood. He went on and on about "if you have blood all over your chest, you should be worried about something else!" and on and on...
What he doesn't realise is, half of the world population must wash bloody UNDERWEAR every month.
...Maybe the guy never got to have a relationship strong enough to learn these things. Maybe no women of self-respect will go out with a man who makes fun of/humiliates everyone else.
Humor out of ignorance is no class; and only idiots would use other people's joke.
Gee, juicy dude, if you use half a second to think about it, you'd know it ain't true. All the free BSD variants are released with GNU tools but the OSes are not GPL'ed.
Anyway, if NeXT is the only "prove" of Apple's UNIX ability, Steve Jobs must be running scared now.
With the exception of a weak argument on office software, every single criteria you have mentioned relate to games. Linux is not a gamers' OS. You'd be happier with a Playstation then a real computer.
(Being just as good as Windows is no use?) Again, in many areas, especially that of networking and multi-users, Windows is not even close.
But then again, why don't you weight you BeOS on the same criteria and see for yourself?
The keyboard I'm using right now has 24 keys that stores up to 320 key strokes, including backspace, control combinations, you name it. And they use machanical key switches so that they last near forever.
It's unrealistic to make the keys macro act like a little virus the way you stated, because 1. It will need to know whether the OS has the text editor opened and ready, which means that it will need to know the OS and somehow read from it.
There are, however, a few different approach that can get it done.
So what happened to Apples' industry leading creatively in design? It looks exactly like NeXT... So much so, I don't know if I should feel sympathetic for NeXT's "way ahead of its time" failure, or disgusted about Apple's shameless imitation.

Sure, I'll come up with something substantial: This guy is a dumb ass. The single reason to not vote for him.
/. is a liberal biased site. If you wanna see what you like, how about go to chrstian science monitor?
Al Gore never said he invented the Internet. read before you post.

Well, I for one, think Window Maker is much eye pleasing than that Aqua thing.
Let me know that you have tried ALL window managers before you trash them. And also, show us your art and design background.

Jokes made out of ignorance is stupidity.
For example. Seinfield has a joke that talks about how he thinks laudry detergent advertisement are stupid because these ads talk about how effectively the detergent can wash away blood. i got a SuSE 6.4 and the man page for "dd" says,
GNU fileutils 4.0 November 1998
... where is it in the kernel code, can you point out?
The less application you have, or the less drivers you have, the better the stability. Hardware mp3 players NEVER crash and "boot" less then 1 second.
Gee, juicy dude, if you use half a second to think about it, you'd know it ain't true. All the free BSD variants are released with GNU tools but the OSes are not GPL'ed.
