I see you've been brainwashed well. Let me put it straight to you - there are two Koreas. One that is run by US puppets (and is in fact has been occupied by the US) and is basically an American and Japanese electronics sweatshop. And there is the other - a democratic, peoples republic run by the people for the people. Guess which one is what.

I too though about the lack of a solid CS course. Here at NSU we have started offering an experimental CS course to one group of third year students. But the more I think about it the more I doubt it's necessity. After all if you look at standard US textbooks (like Rosen's) CS the way is taught is a collection of watered down topics from other branches of math. Why do we need CS if during the first semester alone we study Higher Algebra, Number Theory, Theory of Algorithms, Mathematical Logic - all part of a CS course.

High oil prices helped but it was not the most important factor. The budget was planned based on the much lower price, for instance USD 50 per barrel when it was already above 100. The rest was put away into a stabilization fund. Think of it - did high oil price help Nigeria? Nope, it only made the poor even poorer and further enriched a small elite. That what would have happened if the oil boom took place during the Yeltsin/Oligarch era. Putin did a lot of smart things for the economy in the background but the way Russia is reported in the West they were overshadowed by his perceived authoritarian tendencies.

The reason people here like Putin so much is because despite taking away political freedoms people during the 8 years of his rule have started to be able to afford things that Americans take for grunted. Private car ownership has skyrocketed, pretty much everyone owns a big screen tv and the usual set of home electronics and so on. People started to trust the economy and the banking system enough to take large loans to buy new apartments. It's a sad commentary on the human nature but it seems like we (like everybody else I suppose, including Americans) value the consumerist lifestyle over freedom. This is a genuine attitude even among educated hard-working people. When someone starts to criticize Putins regime they are quickly accused by their peers of supporting "liberasts" (a combination of liberal and pederast (homosexual) Russians are extremely homophobic and and Yeltsin and his teams of liberal economists are hated somewhat less than Hitler) and is suggested to shut-up and get back to working and earning money.
