The problem is, managers should reads books, and studinig this situations, the job of them to solve it and not yours..
There are many books around it, but I believe, you should give books into your boss's hands, and wait for his reaction, if any..

Well.. I read a lot of comments about this subject.. I belive, some site need to use banners to stay free, and some people need it, some not. So let's leave the choice to the people.. if you are hate banners, do not go to site which use them, but dont want to stop them.. Many people dont care about it, some site use good ad-banner engine, which try to give you correct ad.. some site annoying.. even/. has banner on the top.. and if/. got money for it.. well, I say put 2 more,/. just deserve it!

I am really, I mean REALLY hate spams. But unfortunetly I am working in a company, which send -or will- spams to many email. I love my job and company and our project.. but every places have some annoying things.. It makes headache to me, but there is no good reason to stop them. Well, I can not find any.. We have - and normaly every project has - a sponsor. He had to think in two thing: 1. when 2. how much And the project manager will tell him how.
We need to advertise, and there are many ways to do it, but none of tham so strong as spam! Think about it: We collect more then 100 000 emails, and it takes only a few feeks for us, whit 1 man/day work. And we can focus to get the best email, by looking the right places to get them.. so this email owner will be interested by our ad. ( ofcourse not all of them, but lot's of them) So, it is not only a few mail to send away to the world.. And here we go.. I hate it, but I have no idea to stop them to do it! If I'd have a good idea to use other ad, which will be so strong, and cheap, I could stop them.. but I havent..
But there is not only my headache.. most of the company use this type of ad, because of result of it.. if only every 100 people will be interested about this ad, we collect 1000 people in less then a month! (including email collect) And it cost only 1 or 2 days of a programer. And the result use to be much better then 1/100 !
So if we - or anybody- want to stop spam, we have to find out, how can we convince project sponsors, managers about a better way to find users/shoppers. Oh yeah! and these sponsors, managers hate spam too...

I had the "same" problem, but in europe. I was living in a "black hole", so no good internet was available. So i tried the sat-net. It is works, very well, but really have a lot of problems. So what you need, and not just for sat, is a good provider, a good salesman, a good SUPPORT. So first i checked the salesman, and the provider. I was asking questions by email, by phone, and I was just waiting for reply. Some provider answered after a couple weeks.. which is less then nothing.. but some.. yeah there are some! give me answere by email in 3 hours, and correct answare for all of my questions. This provider, or shops, salesman is usually expensier, but just think a bit. If you have a chip shop, but no support how many time will you (ooh.. sorry mate..) ya spent to figure it out why does not works what shoul be..
I just see, many of you have bad theory about virus.. First, the reason why so many virus in windows op systems not only beacuse windows backround, but much more becasue of the user numbers of windows, or other words: popularity! If the world will change (hopfully) unix based system (i mean linux and the friends) will be much popular than win. If this happens, be sure, that virus will be so popular in your systems, as thay are in windows. Every systen has (and will) security holes, some of it known, other dont... yet! The virus can sperad, if find good systems to working.. Because of it, always the most popular operating system will have the most virus to protect from.
And about the anti - virus companies.. thats true, anti - virus companies have good benefit, when a new viri is "storm". But there are so many virus right now in the world, and say just in the net.. no need one more to have enaugh work for the next 10 years.. So if you think this is a good busnines for anti-vir comp., than you are right, but if you think av comp. makes virus in this case.. you are far from the true!! Av comp makes software against viri, and that is much harder work, than write a viri.. and thay have so many job, that no need to use a stupid things like that..
Some of you thinking about open source anti -vir codes, dont you? So what the problem with open-source av prodact? First: it is not safe, to give possiblity to any virus writer, too see the av protection codes.. i belive everyone can see why.. sec.: the big problem is not a home users computer.. but big companies computerS! Servers, and many workstations... If a company have problems with virus, the co will need professionals to help tham, and it need time, and professionals.. in one word: MONEY And you can see, that most of the av comp. has free version of product, some limitation.. but the main funciton is work: SCAN AND FIND virus. Some product wont clean your computer, but show the problem, so you can repair.. or simply delete the file..
ohh yeah and one more little q: What do you think? Who will be in bigger trouble, if av comp. wont make av prodact any more? Do you think, if no av comp, no more virus will be written?
I was wondering too much about it.. it happend years before.. but now.. I still think this is the only perfect way: Have one litle headphone-micro in your ear. And one retina projectors (in your glasses or your heat, or whatever position). So you can see everything what is important, and you can controll with your eyes and your voice. To call a friend just say "phone" "call" "joe" and the call is on the way.. or if you want to know where you are, just say "map" "locate" and you will see front of you the map, and your locatinon.. and so on.. this technic is not the future.. it is working nowdays, just not included together.. yet..

Have you ever heard about a company which is bulding houses without any plans? Software companies are growing too fast, and they want to make more and more and more... there is no time to make good requirements and no time to make a plan..
People, and mostly managers, are not "safe thinking".. Thay want everything as fast as possible. This is the reason why software companies need to use software to controll they process.
But in the other hand, the hardware is looking the same.. i dont remember any C64 which has wrong memory, or motherboard.. it was just good at all! But if I buy a new memory modul to my computer it could be wrong, or it is incompatible with the others!
So, what I belive, we need to use programs to controll the all software designe process, a program which dont let me go around a problem. But I am sad, because we sould use it since 80's!!!
I use to debug a lot.. I have to manage a large, old (in every case) code in c (and it is running in driver aswell). It is all about bad design.. but if anyone make a new code, he will need debugers too, but not the same reason! There are different reason to use one of them, so debuger tools have different way to use for diff. function..
If someone have a new, good designed code, he wont need deep debug.. but if someone have an old code, he need very clever debugging tool, if dont want to debug all the time.. Or there are driver writers, who need to debug sometimes in kernel.. different reason, different tools..
What I missing from debuger, is backword debugging.. if you find the problem, many times, you should go back to find the exact location of problem.. (I mean you find the problem, but you need to find the reason aswell) normaly you can walk back on the stack, but lot's of time it is not enugh.. some function is not on the stack enymore..
What I was saying, that company should fix the problem, who make it! Of coures there is no time to wait for it! But that is why I told, these company should pay for others, who help them out, and not the costumer who bougth the product. You know every product has a quaranty for 1 or more year!! but not with software??
It is not only about Microsoft, it is all about software manufacturer. And the topic is about an open source product. We know there is no bug -clean product, only good or bad product. If the bug is not so big, that is ok. In this topic we was talking about infections, and protection.
I do say, protection have to be in the product, and the costumer should use it!
It would be better if the os company give the protection for own os. But until it will happen, we have to pay for anti-virus software to protect us.

The virus company had a lot of work because too many people make virus!! Not because they want to have profit. But every company working with employee, and you have to pay them. These company needs hardware and knowlidge too.. Of course there should be profit too, but the first reason why they start to make anti-virus protection because of virus.
People can write virus because the software company (mostly the OS manufacturer) make mistakes, holes in the product. This is why they should give the protection too.. and not only with spxxx !!!
If you dont want to pay for a product to protect you, you have to choose another way to protect yourself. Maybe you can, but many of us know nothing about protection! And they need something to use! (mostly every anti-virus company have free product too)
There are more people who know nothing about computer, but use it every day. And I am sorry to say it, but I know too many administrator who know nothing about protection and rules too.. mostly in MS product.
Think about it: If you buy a car, and you have problems with it, will you repair it, or will you bring it to a mechanic? But if all cars from that company have the same problem, the company will find a solution for it, and you dont have to pay for it!!

So I say company who make the codes/product have to be sure the product is clean. There are many ways to do it, but that only technical question which one to use.
This is not the first time that things like this is happaning, ms make this not once!
Open source always a bit dangerious, because there is no one who is responsible for it.
But what does Ms with it?
The question is, who needs to protect us? We have to do it every time and every way? Or the distributer? the company who make the code?

I see this problem from another direction. You are talking about inline, stack, hacking,... but dont forget every language make possible to write almost everything. So what you realy need to think about is not the inline problem, but your code itself. I saw many programmers who try to fix their problem with some hacking, insted of trying to find and fix the real problem. I think you have to think about your code functionality, and than you will be able to see how you can fix this problem witout any hacking. There is always a way to fix the real problem! What you are trying to make is cover a bug with another bigger one! Dont be crazy!! What you should do is planning and not hacking!
