Sounds like a nice idea. However we all know that once physical security is compromise the rest is all down hill. On-top of which, a thief that is just after the machine and cares nothing about the data will still take the machine. He doesn't know that you have a proximity sensor (whether it uses encryption or not). What I would like to see is a tool and/or system that has the kind of reliability and name recognition that something like low-jack has. What I mean is something that a crook will look at and walk away because he will recognize that it will be more trouble than it is worth. Even if he is just stealing it for the hardware. Something that he knows he just can't slap in a windows boot disk and format. Because we all know that most laptop thefts are not by criminals that want data. Its the common crook that just wants a buck. Granted what would also bring down those thefts would just be the prices in laptops coming down, the prices on those haven't fallen nearly as close to the same rate as desktops.

For now I will continue to dream and maybe even write a book entitled "2085" by Ali Orwell. :)

Great, now we have a way for parents to control thier kids internet usage. Lets be honest, parents should NOT NEED this. I won't insult any parents by saying, "Responsible" parents don't need this. Any one who calls themself a parent DOESN'T need this. What Does need to be created however is a top level domain that would kill 2 birds with one stone. One for example like a .XXX, that would allow companies to restrict this domain and not have to keep up with all the pr0n sites on the net and would also allow parents to block this content. I remeber the argument being that this kind of domain could not be regulated properly. This argument was perpetuated by more than a few people in the /. lcommunity and in goverment. But, somewhow a top level kids domain will work? Intresting, I think it will work, and that this should be a move in the right direction of properly placing domains in their respecitve places.

I don't remeber anyone complaing at the birth of the internet that .com's should only be for corporatins and .edu's for schools. This all seemed like a great idea at the time. Somewhere down the line all theses domains became usable by anyone (with the large exception being to .edu's). If the .edu's can restrict their use to only educational facilities why can't .coms only be for corps, and .org's for organizations?

Well, for starters, I don't see why you would need a man in the middle attack on a LAN. To perform a man in the middle attack on a LAN you need a system on the LAN as well. At this point why bother with a man in the middle attack.

I think the kind of security issues you would be most concerned about would be confidentiality. My guess would be that you only place insensitive files on the P2P network, or develop P2P software that has user defined rights. That of course could lead to elevation of privileges attacks. Either way you cut it.

This is all still info that is "internal" to IBM. As everyone knows (or should know) the largest security risk that all companies face comes from internally to begin with. So its not as though these files are not accessible by a malicious and knowledgeable person on the inside already.

There are many ways that the risk can be mitigated with such a system. I could go on for paragraphs on this. I think the concept of using P2P internal for corporations has many advantages and could be come a great tool. Much like any other means of sharing information digitally all the security risk will have to be assessed before it goes into "production"
