Uh, yeah we have a ton of horses carrying bits all over the place--makes for great broadband. [rollseyes]

Seriously though, there's alot of open space around here that you're not gonna get broadband (or even other services) in, but if you live in a "city" (and I use that term loosely) there is cable and dsl just like everywhere else. My DSL speedtest results just showed 4950 down and 748 up. Cell coverage on the other hand can be a bitch, don't expect to use anything other than CDMA (Verizon/Alltel).

There are a fair amount of tech jobs here, considering the number of people, you just have to look. I work for a company doing php and c development, we also have people who do C#/.Net, Java and Python development as well as numerous IS and linux admins. Like someone else said, I'm not getting rich here, but it sure is a nice place to live and I am willing to pay the "scenery tax."

  2. Getting extra wiimotes on Elebits and Warioware - Bad Wii and Good Wii · · Score: 1

If you need wiimotes, just order them from the nintendo.com store. It says on there that they are backordered and not due to ship till next week, however I ordered two wiimotes (along with two nunchucks and the component cable) late Friday (1/19) night. All items shipped (and for only $5 s/h!) on Monday (1/22) and were delivered yesterday.

  3. IBM's Recommendation? on New IBM Linux Notebook Includes DVD Player · · Score: 1

Anybody else check out the spec sheet for the T22 linked from the newsforge article? All the way at the bottom listed under the 'Other' category the following statement appears:

IBM recommends Windows 2000 Professional for business.

    What the ?????

All this after just half a page up they list the Operating System Provided as Caldera OpenLinux 2.4 and the included Productivity Applications as StarOffice. Me thinks somebody over at Big Blue still doesn't quite grasp the concept of using an operating system other than Winblows! Linux on my laptop and desktop has served me just fine and saved me countless hours of work from not having to rewrite code and documents after system crashes.

  4. I wouldn't go near it! on Computer Or Docking Station? · · Score: 1

A few years ago I did support for a company and we ended up supporting mobility made port replicators. The bane of our support center's existence is what appears to have been the precursor to this model. It was a simple port replicator (dubbed the universal port replicator) that replicated the serial, parralel etc. ports through a connection into the pcmcia port. This thing had more bugs and flaws in it than any product I have ever seen and just flat out didn't work most of the time without alot of tweeking.

On top of that, the support directly from Mobility simply sucked--it's existence was even in question at times--and their quality assurance was the worst I had ever seen. The amount of time our department spent supporting and RMA'ing these units had to have wasted most of the profits.

I own a laptop and Mobility makes several products that would be useful, but I avoid them like the plague. It is possible that these things have changed at Mobility, but I am not taking my chances. Just my two cents, but I had to get this off my chest when I saw this story post.

  5. As a student, I agree on What's Banned On Your Campus? · · Score: 1

Though I have been a user of Napster in the past, I would have to say that I agree completely with the above comments. Campus resnet's aren't only for education, but that is their primary purpose.

I attend Montana State University and recently tried to use Napster only to find it blocked. Due to the fact that our admins can't seem to keep the network running for more than a couple weeks at a time, I thought this another problem and called in to complain. The response that I got this time though forced me to grudgingly agree. I was told that following a few complaints about slow Internet access they began monitoring traffic and found that during peak evening hours one-third of the bandwidth was being chewed up by napster, so they shut it down.

Can you believe one-third! That is amazing, and being a former napster user, I can gaurantee that few of those were not copyrighted. I loved being able to get those, but I would rather be able to access the rest of the online world like I had access through several T1's, rather than paying for T1 access and longing for the days of my 56k modem.

I wouldn't be in too big of a hurry to download it. I decided to try it and found that it was pretty much what a previous post said it would be...a bunch of text and images taken out of context and with no real value.

Basically I found it to be something that was kinda neat to look at for about 30 seconds, then I uninstalled it and opened Netscape so that I could actually read /.!!
