Alright, everybody thats whining about how slashdot isnt a support group, consider this:
Firefox, right now, is probably the most prominent open source project out there right now. And no, linux or Apache dont count. Your average joe couldnt give a crap about those. Firefox, however, is something every nitwit loves.
So, Firefox's 1.0 release being unstable is BAD for anybody who gives a crap about the open source movement.
Now, say a certain crash bug is reported on the most read geek news site on the planet. This has the effects of:
1) giving the bug 1000x the prominence it would have it were just reported on bugzilla which in turns leads to
2) the bug getting fixed ASAP which would lead to
3) your average joe not thinking that all open source sucks because firefox crashes
Now, try to resist the urge to be a smartass and consider that maybe slashdot's moderators like to take advantage of slashdot's huge audience to accomplish something other than reporting news-worthy items ( hint: newspapers do this too)
Solution: Spawn of Debian.
Take what is probably the best distro out there and preconfigure it and add some administration utilities and you get the best of both worlds.
Examples: MEPIS, Knoppix, Lindows (Linspire), the late Corel Linux, etc...
Not sure if anybody has said it, but the downloaded previews are playable with the VLC media player ( i.e. videolan's media player, which is open source, btw )
Link
The player will also play just about any media file since it seems to rely on its own internal codecs insted of those installed on your system.
This will be great move to counter their alleged revenue loss from p2p. 128bit downloads at $2.49 a pop? Yep, thats the way to satisfy your customers and not have them run off to other entertainement products. Go RIAA!
Im actually a student at Carnegie mellon University where we have our own teams of robotic soccer players, ranging from cute little Sony Aibos dogs that pwn in international Aibo dog soccer competitions ( not kidding! )to an up and comming segway team!

wow, it almost like your comment doesnt apply at all and youve been waiting to say that for a while.
You blew your load prematurely there buddy. But dont worry, she understands, sure she does...
Isint this approach to installing already used in macs? Im not a mac user but the mountable disk images that you download and mount to run firefox on one seem very close in concept to this Zero Install
for the record, i was using mandrake 9.2, which should be as easy as it gets. And my card uses an atheros based chip, for which you need madwifi - for which there are no precomplied options. No linux CD from vendor either.
Step 2. Console crash course
I think this is is the fundamental obstacle to the success of linux in the desktop. It is completely unrealistic to expect your avg user ( the type who never even consider changing their homepage because they dont know how ) to work with a console. And lets face it, linux today still requires you to work with a console for alot of things, esp software/hardware installation and system configuration.
In fact, I just finished installing a wireless
card in my linux box. Comprared, to windows, where I pop in a cd and hit install, under linux I had to:
1: make & make install the software
2: install some necessary wireless libraries
3: manually configure the wireless card's config file
4: set the kernel to intialize ath0 at startup
now to a techie following a recipie, this is a piece of cake. However, it is quite beyond the capabilities of your avg windows user.
Question: Why would I want to play console games on my PC? The last I checked console games were designed to be played with controllers and not keyboard+mouse and therefore limited to simplistic player interface with the games. E.g. compare NeverwinterNights's( designed for Xbox and PC ) dumbed down interface with the wonderfully complex ( but still easy to handle) interface of Baldur's Gate . Youll find that NWN is more diablo point to monster and click ti till its dead and baldur's gate is more let me quickly sift through my unbelievably large amount of options and quickly find the best one.
Anti American Sentiment: a one act play
Boss ( a politician/buisnessman/citizen ) - American goverment opresses my country economically through clever means such the IMF and WTO. Americans go to war with Iraq without that agreement or support of the mejority of the U.N.. American-based transnational corporations opress my countries laborers and attempt to subvert my goverment to achieve their own ends. On top of this I have to hand over bucketloads of cash to Microsoft to pay for their shoddy software?
Assistant: Wait, why dont we just use linux?
Boss: linux?
Assistant: yes! its a free operating system that works just as well or better than windows. With it we also get a replacement for Office, also free! On top of that it is owned by no big american corporation so not only do we save money, we hurt microsoft and the american economy by switching!
Boss: Brilliant!
the end
moral: The united states is an empire and acts as such, which, historically, will always result in pissing of the rest of the world, creating anti-american sentiment. Anybody who thinks America attacked Iraq for the good of the Iraqi people needs to brush up on their international politics.
This has got to be one of the coolest things I've seen on slashdot. Not only is text to speech interfaced with most of the services of a fully wifi college ( the elevators, printers, music are accesible by ghosts ), but they've given each ghost a unique personality and history to boost! almost makes me want to learn danish and transfer to Copenhagen!
So, therefore, educating systemn administrators about security measures such as that checklist would be a good thing, no? This guide is aimed mainly at IT personnel after all.
A non-compete that broad would get laughed out of court, even if you signed it.
Critical question: Who cares? Why is this important?

sounds like SCO wants to give this attack as much press as possible
