    You know, it's a strange thing with Americans and 'foreign films'. I'm getting the impression that for some strange reason any film from outside the US is automatically supposed to be 'artistic', 'intellectual', or whatnot. With the (for me) strange effect that utter B-movie crap from my youth like Spetters, the only use of which is campy fun as far as I'm concerned, is suddenly being taken seriously.

    There really is nothing special about a film being 'foreign', guys ...

    What's missing in all the sci-fi scenarios is the necessity, before an AI can be built, that humans first understand themselves.

    Not necessarily. To draw an analogy, people have been breeding livestock and plants without understanding of the underlying genetics.

    Another possibility is to use a certain feature of Apache, which lets you throttle bandwidth

    mod_bandwidth. I have used it succesfully to prevent automatic downloaders from taking over our webserver.

    I am an 'in-house' developer for an academic institution.

    Despite all the talk about 'lusers' that is so popular in nerd circles, I find that being in close contact with the people I am developing stuff for, seeing my work actually in use and being able to refine it to fit people's needs can be a very rewarding experience.

    I agree with you on almost all points, except for the Bluetooth: that is actually useful for easy synchronizing of phone numbers with your computer/PDA.

    Ironically I had backup's of both the data and my secret key. But not my password.

    This is why I don't encrypt any of my personal files anymore. I don't want the possibility of getting locked out of my life for good to even exist.

    By the way, I still have two or three encrypted WordPerfect 5.1 files from many years ago laying around that I forgot the password for. Pretty unimportant personal stuff, but it would be nice to be able to open them again. I can't imagine that they used strong encryption back then (it was done with the built-in WP 'add password' tool). Anyone know of any tools that I could use to crack the encryption?

    It's formatted nice, there are no unchecked parameters, yes, yes. but no docs. bah.

    The documentation is contained in those comments. You can extract it automatically into HTML-ized documentation with PHPDoc. It's a bit of a hassle, though, I agree that separate docs are more convenient.

    Even better: turn of Flash/Shockwave completely. I do this on Mac OS X by setting the file permissions of the plugin file to -rw------- (chmod 600). No more distracting animations, and very easy to turn it on again temporarily if needed.

    A wall of text is deadly for an interactive experience. Intimidating. Boring. Painful to read.

    You know what? Give me blocks of text anytime. The whole article on one page, please. Not spread out over ten pages so that I can get more advertisements forced on me. And please, no dumbed-down 'web writing' that is easily 'scanned' No matter what all those usability gurus say, I'm not interested in 'scanning' web pages, I want stuff that is interesting enough to actually read. And I have no problem at all with long blocks of text on the web if what I am reading is interesting to me.
