A couple of New Jersey hunters are out in the woods when one of them falls to the ground. He doesn't seem to be breathing, his eyes are rolled back in his head. The other guy whips out his cell phone and calls the emergency services. He gasps to the operator: "My friend is dead! What can I do?" The operator, in a calm soothing voice says: "Just take it easy. I can help. First, let's make sure he's dead." There is a silence, then a shot is heard. The guy's voice comes back on the line. He says: "OK, now what?"
Funny how everyone perceives the 'heyday of cartoons' simply as the time they themselves watched cartoons as a kid, with everything after that being crap. Different generations - different 'heydays'.
Thank you. I understand that it's a browser plugin, but unfortunately it's Windows only and I can't find anything at their site about planned support of other operating systems. (I'm on Mac OS X.) Still, it's good to know that there is some competition for Adobe in this regard.
It sure would be nice if Adobe would release an updated version of their SVG plugin. The current one, 3.0, is from November 2001. The Linux version is still beta 1.
Or does anyone know of other ways to render SVG in the browser besides the Adobe plugin?
He said that Corel would not exist if it weren't for software piracy, giving them free advertising.
I think you are saying the same thing about music. That putting files on the sharing networks can actually HELP the music sell in stores. And this is so true.
I doubt it. Software was pirated by individual consumers, but marketed at and bought by companies, so the software industry still made money. The music industry just sells to consumers. This analogy doesn't work.
right click (or trl click for a single button mouse) and EJECT also work on Mac OS X, in addition to pressing F12 or draging the CD to trash. So next time, do your home work before you complain about something new to you.
Good points. Also worth mentioning is that when you start dragging a CD in Mac OS X the Trash changes to an "Eject" icon. This whole 'Eject by dragging to the Trash' complaint is no longer valid since OS X.
Point one: rewriting from scratch can be a strategic disaster. [joelonsoftware.com]
Well, that article is from 2000 and the example that he gives is that is was obviously a bad decision for Netscape to start over from scratch after version 4. But is that still so obvious in 2003? Thanks to that decision, we now have the Gecko rendering engine, Mozilla and all its derivatives, so maybe it wasn't such a bad decision after all to rewrite from scratch?

Interesting. Not that I have any idea how much a lb is.
Strange measurements systems aside, I found that the best way to lose excess weight is
Do not eat fat snacks (potato chips, etc.) and sweet stuff (candy) on a regular basis
Exercise regularly
For the rest, eat normally, i.e., don't torture yourself for a limited time with a special diet to "lose weight fast". The weight will come right back when you stop with the diet. You should change your eating habits permanently.
I managed (a few years ago) to go from 85 kg to 77 kg and I'm now at about 78 kg: good enough, though I'd like to get back to 77 again.
I second that. I do have to say that the Godel part of the book is more interesting and enlightening than the Escher and Bach parts, though. Only after reading GEB I actually understood what Godels Theorem was about.

Just think of how much faster you would type if you didn't insert unnecessary apostrophes into words!
Q. What is the purpose of the apostrophe? A. The apostrophe is used mainly in hand-lettered signs to alert the reader that an 'S' is coming up at the end of a word.

Translucent windows is eyecandy and good for demonstrations, but that's pretty much it. Other than that, they're usability nightmares and harm productivity.
I would agree with you in theory, but in practice I found that setting the Terminal windows in Mac OS X to black, and adding a tiny little bit of translucency actually makes for a more pleasant reading experience than a completely opaque window.
I suppose the key is subtlety and not overdoing it (overdoing it would happen in a demonstration to show off the feature).
Full immersion can't happen until all the senses are involved.
I don't know if 'full immersion' would be a good idea for First Person Shooter/Doom-type games. Imagine it. Would it be fun to actually be overpowered by the sickening stench of rotting corpses, to taste molten lava, and god knows what else?

I found Infinity and the mind by Rudy Rucker an interesting book about the mathematical concept of 'infinity', written for a non-specialized audience.
