Why doesn't ABIT just fix their chipsets so mainstream kernels work on them? Entire mailling lists have been created for ABIT boards, not because they are good, but because certain models don't work well (if at all) with linux.
How about putting some effort into fixing that before making Yet Another Distro!
Doesn't the GPL allow programmer A to to take all the changes made to his project by programmers b-z and fold them back into his own project, still under the GPL, and thus save him the time of chasing the bugs himself?
Yes it does. The original poster wants to close his source after he gets the hard work from the bug-fixers (programmers b-z).
and if you release a piece of software under the GPL, it's GPL until the universe dies
Yes, and that is the way it should be.
If you plan on taking the work of others and closing your source, use a non-copyleft license like the XFree86 license. This feature of the GNU GPL is intentional. I personally contribute to GPL software because I know it can't be closed later.
I don't think its a childish reaction. I think many of us don't want to support a company (i.e. GTI) which is not willing to even acknowledge linux even in an unsupported manner.
What is the revenue breakdown between Epic and GTI. Say its 50/50 (support costs a bunch). Am I willing to subsidize Windows users? Hell no. (Sorry Epic, I know it was a last minute thing.)
Some will say that Epic has released the linux x86 binary on their web site. If I were a windows user considering linux, should I be responsible for researching the web for every linux game I want to play? It is possible, but an unreasonable amount of effort IMO. Does anyone know if the CD has a readme file pointing to linux binaries at Epic's site? Most likely not.
The guy from Epic looks like he tried his best and I commend him. I wish GTI saw the light. The game sounds good. I hope those who do decide to purchase the game let their voice be heard through their registration card.
Yes! Albertson's rules. When I have a choice, I never go to ABCO/Safeway/Frys grocery stores anymore. Albertson's stores are almost without exception cleaner, priced lower, and generally more pleasant to be in. The best part is Albertson's doesn't have those stupid "Advantage Cards."
I've converted friends to Albertson's as well. It almost feels similar to the reasons we switch to linux.:-)

Which brings me to an interesting question: ARE there any high-profile women in the computing industry? Of course, anyone reading this will know (or have learned in this thread) about Ada Lovelace and others in programming, but everyone knows who Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, and (now) Linus Torvalds are. Are there any female counterparts?
Ya, there is that chick who was involved in writing Java. She is pretty cool.
Preach on brother Matt. Same things happened here. The problem with getting a chick into computers having to listen to her problems -- ESPECIALLY when you find it a trivial problem and can pop the answer off the top of your head. Telling your gf shes stupid isn't a good way of gettin some that night.
IBM's processor stuff looks good on paper, alone, but they are not anywhere near leading the pack -- especially for integers. The Alpha and HP PA-RISC processors are where you find top notch speed. Last I heard, IBM can't even do SMP with more than 12 processors. Don't respond with IBM SPs...I said SMP.
I'm won't even touch the price/performance ratio of IBM gear.
If it was AIX, I hope they fired those mathematicians. AIX is *far* from bugfree.

Well, then quit stealing software! Did you and everyone you know pay for all the payware on their systems? Ya, didn't think so. (P.S. If you're giggling at the thought, you know you're guilty)
CPU IDs aren't as bad as everyone makes them out to be. All the highend (Sun,HP,IBM,SGI,&others) processors already have and use them daily.
Sure, personal accounting software is nice and needed for linux. However, I'm interested in seeing US TAX software.
Are there any efforts underway to get tax software for linux? I think it is really needed.

That says more about your linux skills than it does about either OS. You can't deny that linux has much more device support than BSD.
Fact is: OpenBSD would be a waste on a quad xeon. It doesn't support multiprocessor systems.
I installed RedHat 2.1 in 1995. It was the best then and remains the best now.

BUT that does NO GOOD if you DON'T BUY the WINDOWS version!!
If Epic is not going to support linux, I am not going to support them. Its that simple.
How stupid is it develop a linux executable and not drop it into an unsupported directory on the CD?
I'll be putting my money in ID's direction.
Thank you Epic.
I suggest you read http://maps.vix.com/tsi/ar-what.html before you make more of an ass of yourself.
Yep, just like the DVD guys. You can see how great that worked out.
Luckily the shockwave folks were serious about their technology and made a linux plugin. I applaude their efforts.
USB is nice, but I'd like to see more FireWire.
Compaq better hurry up or the world is going to pass them by.
