    As far as I know, the companies pay these costs.. but artists must pay them back when they start pulling in money. The companies are loaning the artists money, is all.

    They want it both ways:

    1)You own the media to the extent that if it breaks, you have no choice but to buy another.

    2)You down't own the media so therefore we can tell you what to do with it. See DVD region coding, making backups and transferring to other media for personal use (MD, MP3 etc)

    Check out mympc, a 14 meg version of media player classic that plays EVERY video file I've ever encountered.. RealPlayer, Quicktime, every Divx variant and includes all the sound/video filters I've ever seen. Works like a charm, and the bonus is you can uninstall the annoying 3rd party players like RP and QT.

The offical non-modded Chinese PS2's with only one controller and no games cost 2300RMB. In two cities where the average income is below 1500RMB per month, who would buy the official version?

In a lot of Australian universities the bookstores, university admin and student unions are in cahoots, making cheap textbook purchases on campus very difficult. A state-wide used-textbook sourcing site would be the perfect solution, but it would have to be organised by someone other than the university or the 'student' union.
