  1. Hiro Protagonist on Laser HUD Projected on Retina · · Score: 3, Interesting

This device reminds me of the display Hiro uses in Neal Stephemson's "Snow Crash." No monitor, per se, but instead, a laser paints his eye with the image of the metaverse. Same idea, it seems. I like it (my 21 inch monitors are so bulky!), but I agree with an earlier post that these devices should be held under the same kind of scrutiny that medical eqipment is. The innovation is great (and it's about time!) but it _must_ be safe.

Can I take one of those so called MUSIC CD's and burn data on it? Probably.

Yes, you most certainly can. I had a pack of CDRs purchased for me once, and when I noticed that they were "music" CDRs, I almost had them returned, but then I gave it the old college try, and lo and behold, it held my "data" too. Raise the roof.

In other words, I think that the person(s) who proposed all those taxes/tarrifs should be held in a small cage and forced to listen to Britney Spears for the rest of his/her life.

  5. Re:This Gold Edition crap is weak on Project Majestic Mix · · Score: 2

And? How is that weak? Dedication (I _always_ look around for new FF stuff) has its rewards.

Incidentally, you know some people will be ripping the Gold Edition set right away. Not me, though. This is one CD set that won't be going in my shared folder.

  6. More Information on Project Majestic Mix · · Score: 5, Informative

What the poster (and /. editors left out) was the following information:

There are three versions of PMM (Project Majestic Mix): Gold, Silver, Unlimited. Gold is available for purchase only directly from the gang who put the whole thing together, and is also only available for those who contributed $20 or more to the fundraising. The Silver version is available for preorder until the last day of March, from Animenation.com, as the poster mentioned. The Unlimited, as also mentioned, will be for general sale, probably everywhere under the sun.

The Gold edition is packed with more tracks than the others, IE: those who donated get great rewards. The Silver has less than gold, and the Unlimited has less than Silver, but 2 (if I remember correctly from an email from Mustin) tracks that are not on the Gold. Confusing? Sure it is. ;-)

I donated $20 for the project, mostly because I have been a huge fan of the Final Fantasy musical scores since I first experienced FF6. Nobo is my musical hero. Also, I should note, I liked the idea that my name (yes, my name!) will be included in the booklet, along with all the others who donated a $20 sum or more. Gold edition and name in the book, what more could a guy ask for?

I'm anxious as can be to get my Gold edition, which, might I add, cost me $15 to purchase (yes, my donatation did NOT go towards the price of the CD, but that's fine with me). The samples I have heard are fantastic.

In short, if you enjoy Final Fantasy, and are longing for some nostalgia, buy the CD(s). You won't regret it, but, hey, if you do regret it, there's always eBay. ;-)

  10. Explanation of the joke on Interesting Concepts in Search Engines · · Score: 3, Informative

For anyone out there who doesn't quite know why this is +5 worthy, here is the joke:

Super Bowl Sunday a commercial aired, featuring none other than Kevin Bacon at a retail store, trying to use a check to pay for his goods. The man behind the counter asked to see ID, but Bacon didn't have any on him. What now? Bacon runs around town gathering people (an extra he played in a movie with, a doctor, a priest, an attracive girl, and maybe one other guy?), who all had some ties to one another, through the other 6 in the group. The attractive girl once dated the sales clerk in the store, so Kevin explains that they are "practically bothers," hence putting to good use the principle of 7 degrees of seperation.

Therefore, the humor lies within. :) This is, of course, a very pop-culture oriented joke that will probably fade even more quickly than AYB did after its behemoth prime of last year and the December before. Long live the meme.

I really don't think they are effective... in fact, they look rather cartoonish. Not to mention completely out of place. Did the Slashdot crew come up with this scheme, or was it some hapless advertising agency? If it was the latter, here is my suggestion: fire the crew, and find someone with a little more sense about them with respect to these sorts of things. The ads are HIDEOUSLY out of place. Let me say it again: they look dumb where they are.

This is not meant to be a flame/troll/whatever the moderators come up with next - this is my honest opinion. Sure, I don't like any ads at all, but at lease the popup ads were done in a respectable manner - and they didn't look silly.

Come on guys, fix this up. It's awful; and you are more than likely going to lose a great deal of your community, soon. Then what will you do? The site, devoid of content, won't be worth a dime, and your precious scheme will have failed you. Get it right before it becomes too late.

I don't think this is going to go over very well with most people.

Eventually, even if trillions of years from now, human life will in fact end, whether from the universe re-collapsing into a singularity or expanding infinitely into a state of zero order.

Well, as much as the theory behind your statement leads much creedence to the possibility, it's not a for sure by any means. There have been a plethora of theories which are constantly refuted as new data becomes available about the "ultimate fate" of the universe. Personally, I place most of my faith in the idea that the universe will continue to expand until all matter as we know it is so far apart that there is no sufficient sources of energy left - but, that's not to say we, the human race, or what we make ourselves by that time, will not have discovered/invented a way to either enclose ourselves off from the expansion and contraction, or, as many string theorists believe, create a "lifeboat universe" and escape in that way.

In short, what I am saying is that there is no "for sure" fate in store for us - as far as we know. The universe is open to us, let's not abandon all hope just yet.

    EXCUSE ME???

I fail to understand why any sentient being would take that perspective on life... are you complacent with the statement you made? Do you WANT to fade away? Do you wish that on your race? Your species? I certainly do not. Personally, I want to see us soar into space, settle on as many planets, planetoids, moons, asteroids, space stations, comets and suns as possible. While there are many who are skeptical about humans eventually migrating from the homeworld, I'm not one of them. I think we can do it. I believe we WILL do it. Wheter we conquer our problems on Earth first, is, of course, another story. Perhaps Earth will be damaged beyond repair, and it will be essential for all but a few humans to eventaully leave the planet, lest they be ravaged by disease, hunger, or any of a multitude other plights which may face our descendants.

    We won't live forever.

While some transhumanists may disagree with you there - I see your point, but, you are wrong. We will continue to grow, change, adapt, evolve to the situations which the cold universe presents to us, but, I have strong reservations about the human race dying out. In thousands of years from now we will, to be sure, be an entirely different and perhaps unrecognizable species - or maybe even more than one species - but, we will still exist, in one form or the other. Even if it is simply the human spirit living inside a wholly different organism. We will live on.

So let me save you the suspsense, pack your shit folks, we're all going away.

No, I don't think so. Why don't you do us a favor and go away yourself, so you won't get in the way of those of us who truly aspire to peace and progress for humankind.
