  1. Standards and Interface on IBM Reinvents Punch Cards · · Score: 1

I am entirely for replacing traditional storage devices. Hard drives contain moving parts, and that usually lends itself to failure more often than solid state devices. The thing I have a hard time imagining at this point in the game is a standard of interface for the new devices.

Right now we have plenty of good storage media in the market: Flash Cards, Sandisk, etc.. and gobs of neat things in the prototype/research stage: this "postage stamp" card, holographic storage, and if you remember a while ago there was the physicist at U Michigan who was fooling with the idea of encoding an infinite amount of data on a single electron. The problem is standardized interface.

Proprietary interfaces won't be very easy for the market to utilize. We like hard drives because our motherboards come with the proper interface to read/write the data to the disk. What if we ended up with all these cool new devices, but didn't have a standard of interface? Simple: they would not catch on, money would dry up, and the technology would still be in a rut.

Let's hope someone addresses this issue.

I don't like this idea one bit. It's the same principle that would end up letting a whole host of "fees" into the bill that we get from our ISPs at the end of the month.

It also reminds me of the college tuition bill. The tuition, and then the tens of fees tacked onto the bill, that end up summing at nearly $1000.

    I disagree.

I've been using eBay since late 1999, and up until VERY recently (the last month) I have had absolutely NO trouble. I have participated in thousands of auctions, and have both purchased and sold items. The overwhelming majority of people who use eBay are trustworthy and use the service because it facilitates transactions with ease.

As for the small few who misrepresent items, don't deliver, or just cheat in general, well, they are idiots. Last month I was ripped off twice. The result? I called the proper authorities, and those members are, well, not members anymore. Furthermore, I pursued the crimes and got either my money back, or the item I had purchased.

eBay works, if people are willing to use what's there.

When I'm in a game, I want to be completely surrounded by the fantasy. I don't want to remember that it's just a game, and not being able to do simple actions like swimming and climbing rip me right out of the fantasy, and plop me down in reality.

I get junked down with so much spam I have a hard time finding messages that are NOT spam in my mailbox. Is this a problem? You bet your ass. Have I done anything about it? Yep.
