Wow... I'm suprised to hear about people having these troubles. I've had my iBook for over a year now and its never given me any trouble. I had to replace the keyboard twice but that was my own doing and Apple took care of that under the warranty.
I guess the newer faster models just get that much hotter.
Ya, I noticed that this morning when I reread the article.

This has been covered a few times, but they definately are active even after you leave the store. If you read the article you'll see they are embeded in your items. These arent like the "chicklets" or other devices currently in use at stores to set off alarms. Each item would have its own unique id # (assuming they come up with a standard).
This would be great for places like Frys which could finally prevent you from buying 1 item and returning it with a different item in the box. Then again they probably dont care anyways. How many times have you gone home thinking you just bought a new Geforce card or something and found fonud an old matrox millenium in the box? Dont laugh it happens pretty often at Frys.
But the point is it wouldnt be too hard for Ashcroft to sneak a line or two into the Patriot II. Next thing you know all of these comapnies are required to submit who bought which RFID to the DOJ and airport scanners start searching for those numbers.
Just hope that used pair of jeans you bought at the thrift store didnt once belong to someone who is now a fugitive.
K-Mart has a bunch of these too. They run win2k from what I can tell and use a cheep 3com webcam to make sure you're putting stuff in your bag only after you've paid for it.
Ive seen them blue screen and start spitting out all of their paper from the receipt printer.
But ya you can serve yourself and they take cash or credit.
Ya, but he works for trasmeta. If he were trying to pimp the company he works for he'd be pushing some Transmeta chip not AMD's stuff. Then again I could be wrong and there could be some connection between AMD and Trasmeta or some "The enemy of my enemy is my ally" type of deal.
Looks like a Senate version of the "Digital Millenium Consumer Rights Act", a bill being worked on in the house. The EFF was/is seeking support for the DMCRA, check EFF.org for an Action Alert on the topic.
As pretty much everyone has commented, price is important. But safety I'd say is even more critical than price. What I would love to see is a new vehichle thats cheaper per launch as well as safer. I'd like to think our technological abilities since the 80s have improved enough where this can be pulled off to some degree.
An extended stay on the moon seems like it would be a good test prior to taking a trip to Mars. I think its been too long since we've gone there.
I wouldnt mind us paying for this by doing sattelite launches for comercial purposes etc, (ala Russia). The only requirement I'd put on this is that it should not impact scientific research or become NASAs priority.
But anyways ya, I'd give to space exploration if I knew it wouldnt be going to administrators paychecks but rather to new developments / research.
I've noticed very long delays on my AT&T Wireless phone when recieving e-mails / text messages. The other day I sent some test e-mails and got a few of them almost 2 hours later. No idea if any messages are getting lost though.
Im sure someone will get some use out of this, but source code wont do much good unless you can make modification. I mean maybe you can get a better grasp on how some of their stuff works, but the real advantage to open source is that anyone can change it and add to it.

Didnt that statute get removed by the FCC recently? I dont think the phone co's are required to let competition in anymore.
