  1. I'm curious... on New, More Destructive Love Bug Variant · · Score: 5

Do any virus writers read Slashdot? And if so, would any of you care to explain *why* you do it? Ignoring the simple macro viruses, some stuff, especially the polymorphic ones are incredilbly clever pieces of code. Why put that talent to waste?

I'm also looking to upgrade fairly soon. I've read a lot about the Abit KA7 m/board which supports PC133. Unfortunately it apparently has problems with some DIMM's (due to the KX133 chipset so maybe other boards suffer the same). Specifically 128M DIMM's don't work until a 64M DIMM has been in. Has anyone had any experience with this? In all other aspects the board is really good, but I don't want to buy one and find it doesn't like the memory.

  3. Manners anyone? on SourceForge Fails To Forge Source? · · Score: 5

It seems to me that although open source has forced a major improvement in software development, it's done the exact opposite for manners. Since when was it polite to tell people how and when they should do something? They (like me) will release their source as and when they see fit. You have *no* right to tell them otherwise you miserable little bastards. Accept what you're given gratefully, else you may find you won't get it again.

I was also speculating why it exists.

It exists because people want it. There are people unlike ourselves who may want to develop software with the minimum of fuss and bother. This will suit them. It's like driving a car, you just get in the thing and put your foot down. Do you care what makes it work underneath? I sure don't, unless somethings wrong with it I just use it. This is the same principle.

this is the way development under UNIX has happened and (should?) happen.

I don't think forcing people to develop software in a particular way is good for open source. If someone wishes to use a devlopment environment like KDevelop, who are we to say they shouldn't? It's not something I would currently use, but that doesn't mean others shouldn't.

I'm curious why you think forcing an environment on someone is a good idea. Isn't that what Microsoft have done, and what half of the open source community is actively fighting against?

I'd have to disagree. I think its quite stable. It needs a lot of work though, as do most beta projects. The two main things that niggle me is the huge memory footprint (although I realise this is likely to drop when debug stuff is removed) and the lack of browser only binaries. If there *was* a browser only I probably would have switched by now. But, the mozilla guys are doing well, and I'll be first in line for the beta relase.
