Whats the point in packages? They don't achieve much IMHO. Dependencies have to be sorted out if you use packages or not. The only thing thats made easier by packages is removing software. How often does one actually do that? I rarely remove software. Who cares if a program's needed or not, the disk space is cheap. So thanks very much for the pretty installer and all the myriad of package formats out there, but I'll stick to my trusty old configure; make; make install routine. Works every time.
www.freenetname.co.uk are doing this in the UK. And its operational. And it works. Pretty crappy ISP though, but a free domain name is a free domain name all the same. Watch out for the small print though. There are a few catches therein.
A friend of mine downloaded a demo over a year ago, and I downloaded one a few months ago. I suspect things have changed a little since then, but this is hardly new news. Whats the big deal?
The problems we face have a lot to do with the fact that we have evolved into intelligent free-thinking individuals. If a wild animal were born severely handicapped, it would die, either through neglect/starvation or by becoming prey to another animal. But because we place so much emphasis on ethics and moral rights (as we rightly should) we have a whole mess of problems to deal with. The higher up the food chain, the more responisbility you have. We're at the top, unfortunately for the rest of life on this planet, we ain't doing a very good job.
The proportion of major companies in which there is no career progression to board level if "all" you do is provide technical infrastructure is still huge
But surely if you progress to board level you'll be a paper pusher, and not a techie. What self-respecting techie wants to become a manager? I certainly don't. I'd rather get to play with the new hardware than have some dimwit secretary telling me which meetings I have to attend.
I shut down my home machine every night. I wouldn't like this stuff running every time I boot up. But then I don't use any dist so it doesn't affect me in the slightest. I did choose to use RH at work unfortunately, but I'll be nuking it as soon as I get the time. It sucks.
I never said it didn't, did I? I actually like Solaris, once I've bunged a few GNU utils on the system its quite usable. I've got a UE3500 all to myself atm, which is kinda fun...;)
Solaris itself may be more solid than Linux, but the standard tools that come with it suck. The GNU tools that come with all Linux distros are far better. Once you'd replaced all those, there would be little difference to the end user. I believe a selling point of Solaris 7 is that it now comes with traceroute. Wow! Wish we had that for Linux;)
That drives me insane. I run my 17" monitor at 1280x1024. Its making the most out of the hardware. And then I see a guy running a 21" monitor at 800x600. And I think, what a berk. The pixels are so huge it just looks silly. Why do they always give the nice hardware to the guy who doesn't know how to use it? It's just not fair dammit!
Thats if you know you're buying it. I think it was only recently that they made it a requirement to label food packages with GM ingredients. I for one have never looked for it, so I've probably eaten tons ofthe stuff already. Never done me any harm so far... I hope...
I haven't been in "mom and dads house" as you so cutely put it, in several years. Not that it has much to do with anything.
I never said it was a good thing. I wish we could all just do as we please without any restrictions on freedom. But we cannot. A modern society will not function that way. I'm just being a realist here.
Take the car. When it first arrived on the scene, you could just hop in and drive where you damn well pleased. No license, no restrictions. I'd like to see you try that now. In that respect, modern society has resticted your options. You can no longer exercise your freedom in that area. I realise its a greatly simplified example, but it holds true in several cases.
I am not willing to give up my freedom for convenience.
Bit late to start worrying about that now. All the progress made in the last century or so has made many people's lives easier. It's also reduced their freedom. Thats what laws and stuff do. Progress is made, freedom is lost. Go with the flow or risk being flattened in its wake.
Well, call me strange, but I always thought it was the applications that display the video files, not the OS. Berk.

I think you'll find this was posted a couple of days ago... ;)
Funny, I didn't see that stated in the original comment.
xanim is unable to display the quicktime videos =(
Why do people insist on bringing Window Maker into the Gnome versus KDE equation? Window Maker is a window manager. Nothing more.

A good point well made. But I still wouldn't want to do it. I'd be the first to welcome someone who did though.
And it also answered all the questions about the monoloth and dave bowman
I think that was the idea. Some people hate endings that finish the story. Some don't. It's a matter of taste.

Only in America. Thankfully.
2001, or 2010 I think. Can't remember which now, it's a while since I read the books.
That would be why its been corrected to QWERTY then? ;)
Looks like the proofreader is still asleep guys....

So its all true. Money really does grow on trees. Well, credit cards do... ;)

Yes it sucks, but no-one ever said it wouldn't.

if the third slot is empty, memory can be lost between motherboard and memory
Is it just me, or does that line make no sense? Should it be data is lost perhaps? Slashdot really needs to proof its articles before posting.
