    While Google is probably telling more of a truth than Sun is how do we really know until we see the code?

    You don't. But rather than just bitching about it, how about you just exercise some patience and wait a little while? Counting them out before they even get started is a little unfair, don't you think?

    Fluxbox is a window manager. It manages windows. KDE and Gnome are desktop environments. Please, please, please will people understand the difference. If you want to compare fluxbox and metacity or kwin then fine, it's a fair comparison. When fluxbox can do everything that Gnome or KDE can do, in less memory, then you have a reason to brag.

    When other MTAs can match Sendmail's flexibility, then maybe I'll consider switching. But not before.

    I haven't used sendmail in years, having switched over to exim a long while ago. Out of interest, what does sendmail offer you that exim doesn't?

    And I use a mac, so commence making fun of me for being a hypocrit. Linux is an OS for guys with testicles far bigger than the lowly pair I was given.

    You can just click the middle button anywhere on the page. It'll do a paste of the buffer and load the url in it. You don't have to paste it into the url bar. Once you've done it a few times it makes life a lot easier. It's a far larger target to paste into. Just be careful not to click when you're hovering over a link.

    As copper ethernet is nearing its end, fiber only seems like the only other logical way to go for networking.

    I disagree. Copper is absolutely fine for the desktop. There's no reason to use fibre unless your network point isn't close enough, which is unlikely. Fibre for the backbone is perfectly sensible, since that's the area where you're most likely to need to increase speed. Copper is far easier to work with, and far cheaper, and unless you need 10gbit to the desktop (I know students consume a lot of bandwidth, but that's taking things a little far), copper will do you just fine.

    WordPress (GPL), which is an equally powerful CMS, seems like a perfect candidate for those who are considering a switch to a non-crippled, free alternative.

    Presumably you believe it's crippled because you have to pay for it, which I have to say I find a poor argument. Pay for the stuff if you think it's worth the money, use something else if you don't. It's not a hard choice.

    Check you have: ohci_hcd, ehci_hcd, uhci_hcd, usbmouse and usbhid.

    Aren't those modules USB? Why would you need USB for a PS/2 mouse?

    I plumped for an NVidia card for my new machine, but did consider the ATI ones. In the end I went for NVidia because the drivers seemed better supported. My question is, did I miss anyone? Are there any other cards that can run modern(ish) 3D games under Linux?

    I can understand where you're coming from in terms of work purchases, but I don't see what it has to do with personal ones, which seems to be what this story was about. I certainly don't care how much of my personal time I use (within reason) to look for the best deal.

    Glad to see you using ebuyer. It's by far the best I've found for prices, and the website is just great. No other comes close in terms of layout and usability, and the user reviews are generally pretty useful too. They could do with speeding up their servers and/or link a bit though.

    If you have a decent mail reader, Gmail has nothing to offer you.

    Apples and Oranges. GMail is webmail, available from anywhere you can get a browser. The same cannot be said of gnus, or for any other standard MUA.

    Exactly. If you release free (and specifcally GPL) software, it's free for all. That's one of the underlying concepts of the GPL after all. The upshot of this is that it will be used by both good and bad people. How many spammers are running Linux on their spamming boxes? What are we supposed to do about it anyway? Put a clause in the license to say only good people can use it? Who defines good? Honestly, this guy is just using his position to have a whine. I'm not saying he hasn't good reason to complain, but I don't see what Linux has to do with it.

    What I'd really love to see, and what I hope D inspires if not actually implements, is a language with the power of C/C++, but the easier syntax of Java.

    I'm not sure I'd want that. A complaint I've heard several times from Java developers is that it's much too verbose. Needing to create set and get methods for every object etc. I'm not a Java developer so I can't comment on how much of a problem this is, but if it is true, I don't see what the appeal of it is.

    Great news, but now the 1.7 stable release has been pushed back by a month. So, if FireFox is based on the 1.7 trunk it would mean that the FireFox 0.9 release will be pushed back too.

    So, you have to wait an extra month. What's the big deal? I'd rather wait and have something that bit more stable. You can always use a nightly build if you really want to use the latest features. I fail to see what the problem is.

    Linux hasn't just failed to produce a system that Aunt Tillie can use - it has failed to produce a system that ERIC S. RAYMOND can use! That is a pretty spectacular failure.

    I'm sorry, but who gives a fuck? I'm not trying to troll here, but if he can't use it that's tough. There are plenty of people using Linux for their day to day work. I'm one of them.

    A the end of the day, most people are writing open source programs to solve a problem that they have. It just so happens that quite often this problem is common, and others can make use of it. If they don't, it's no big loss.
