So after the 20,000 people in this state are divided up into farmers, policemen, builders, powerplant engineers, factory workers, etc. (in other words, everything needed to run a modern society), about how many people do you expect them to come up short for running the state? A million? Million point 5?

Liberal? Where the hell did you get that idea? I'm a conservative through and through. I was saying they are going to want to have their own laws and country, but want US to fund it. And to that, I'd tell them to go jump in a river.
They'll probably expect to write their own laws, yet still have police and military protection from the US. They'll also expect the US Government to not let utility companies gouge them in prices, and they'll likely expect constant infrastructure improvements, such as highway building/maintenance.
Basically this is another dumb "We want our Utopia, and we want you to pay for it" ideas. I would propose heavy import/export taxes on them, as well as border patrols, and random searches of vehicles crossing the borders.
Because a majority of the population are not computer savvy. It's a sad fact but true. Slashdot readers are not a fair representation of society. For all the insulting of AOL each one of us likes to throw out there, 10 other people think of AOL as the only way to get online.
And they are happy with that. Computers are not the end all, be all of life that they are to some of the people here. These other people prefer to go out golfing, take the kids to ball games or whatever, then just come home, take 5 minutes to check email, and then turn off the computer. They are the majority of internet users out there, and they are why AOL will likely never fold.
I haven't owned a DVR, but my wife and I were considering buying one. I noticed that there was a subscription fee for Tivo. What exactly is the subcription for? Why is it needed? And do the two companies (Tivo,Replay) charge about the same?
Did anyone else notice that the stock photo of the girl over on gettyimages.com was a Royalty Free photo? So that means that Microsoft, eternal foe of free software, is more than happy to go to a photo house and only take their free images rather than actually help support the photo house by purchasing rights to a different picture...
You make some insult about undergraduate architecture courses, then you go on to regurgitate what they teach... interesting.
All that aside, I was speaking from a usage point of view, not hardware. So a chip picks up an extra.5 GHz, does the user notice that? Honestly? Does OpenOffice, Office, or Lotus even, start up THAT much faster? No, they don't.
GHz are not a real measure of performance. You can have a machine with 50 GHz, but if it's running junk programs that don't take full advantage of it, it's worthless.
Apple is one of the few companies to realize that pure speed does not equal quality.
It is interesting to see that scanner prices have dropped with better and better digicams going on the market. It's portable, you have less resolution lost, and it's faster thanks to firewire.

Guess what bucko? I pay just as much social security as you do. Quite frankly, I don't want to see little 70 year old men and women starving to death.

If that's the case, then go back to school. Get a job that has a steady flow of income, such as something in the medical industry. The generation is not screwed. IT might be, but you are not chained to IT. Anyone can change their profession if they have the drive to do so.
This just makes me think of these two people that live down the street from us. Let me paint you a picture:
My wife is in pharmacy school, and I'm in IT. We are doing ok covering our bills, but we still have some nasty debt due to basic living expenses and school. It's ok though, as we try to be conservative and are holding out until she graduates and get's the insanely good wages pharmacists earn (90K right out of school is not hard to find, average is 75K).
Down the street live another couple, the wife of which is in pharmacy school, and the husband trying to get in but can't pass the classes. Anyway, he has no job, she has no job. Yet she constantly whines of the demands of life. My wife meanwhile takes the same courses and works 15 hours a week. Their parents pay for everything for them. On top of that, and this takes the cake, they have no life insurance. So when he hurt his back recently, they went down to the government to get medicare.
This means that I am having to pay taxes to support those two morons while they f' off whatever money they have. Yet they still complain about having to pay taxes, bills, etc.
This whole generation is just f'd up. I really fear for when the majority of it has control of government. Then you can honestly say "we're screwed."

Oh wait though, by your definition, everyone over 40 is a greedy miser that does nothing but steal from you...

This is just idiotic. I can't believe people continue to write articles like this to give these people without common sense yet another thing to blame for their own mistakes.
Grow up and accept responsibility for your own life. People love to complain that there aren't enough jobs out there for IT. There are plenty of jobs. It's YOUR FAULT if you don't go after them and accept a slightly lower salary than you were making 3 years ago.
Learn to accept some personal responsibility for something. ANYTHING.
The title of this thread is seeming more and more accurate.
Oddly enough, I was going for "Funny" as the entire concept of the article is a laugh riot, IMO.

The South tried this once already gang. Didn't work. The Imperialists will come after you with guns and say "stop that" just like they did back then.
