the more of us that choose to support windows users , the more secure our jobs are because of the insecurity of the product they use. The more windows f's up , the more money Ill make supporting the users that use such product. So in esence, having inferior product makes me more money.
Alternately however, it makes me work more time, which probably means Ill burn out faster than a *nix admin , who doesnt have to to work as hard or as much.
Hmmmmm....Typical of an Anon Coward. If your going to flame , at least do it with an account so we can all Foe you out.
Again I refer to my previous post , if M$ is willing to dump free software onto a group to salvage a lost market share, no matter how small (14k in relative to the world is pretty small) , is a clear sign that M$ is concerned about loss.
Not saying that M$ doesnt have its place, it does. Its done wonders for the client to start off.
But its time to innovate, and they havent done that. All theyve done is release unstable and insecure product into the market and allow it to do what it does. Would we have large qualifiers of legistlation and law items going against spyware, malware, and viruses, if not for Microsoft?
Can someone answer that?
If your going to make a Troll comment at least do it with some flair.
Of course in Ballmers case, he sees a loss of marketshare. Thats probably why he offered.
What suprises me is the choice to go to Debian. Id have thought with the popularity of Novell/Suse in Europe, that it would have been the logical choice.
with his rebates. I think M$ is so vicious in their borg like behavior that giving an entire group of 14,000 users a 90% rebate is just a sign of what theyll do to keep their userbase in Europe. Something I fear that they have clearly lost already. Why doesnt Ballmer just give them Windows for free and see if that will denth their $800,000,000+ settlement by the EU?
I believe that, and a few others might qualify. Win32 API Shatter Attack, have they fixed that yet? Will they?
I think I remember hearing that unless M$ restructures the Sec model, there really isnt a way for them to stop it from happening.
and why do I use M$, well, because Bill Gates exemplified Greed to me. The Largest software developer in the world, Oracle not far behind, M$ exudes Greed, Avarice, and Exclusionism (w?). And that dear friends comes from a 30 developer , not a 13yo, like so many critics of Slashdot seem to think.
as previously stated by many, Ubuntu is still a child. A very well liked child, but still a child. Second release, Warty Warthog being the first of course, Id say they are doing a fairly well and good job. Good enough for http://distrowatch.com to top them on the list of per hits on that site. Clearly good enough to stray some Deb Maintainers to the project.
That be said, its true...... There are a number of issues in the mend that need to be corrected before you take an end-user and put them infront of it. Still, I think its a very respectable start.
I see Mozilla making a base release and then numerous companies like -- Google, This company, and whoever else will redux firefox for distribution -- to release a product that suits a specific need.
Sounds strangely like the relationship between Debian --> Ubuntu, MEPIS, Knoppix, Morphix, Kanotix, Linspire, Xandros, etc etc etc.
I feel less likely that its a matter of Tridge saying that, and more to McVoy expressing his irritation. Of course can you blame him?
He could be horribly concerned that the code , properly reverse engineered as stated, could be spread around. McVoy may not trust Tridge that much. The article is skewed in this manner however, as it gives little light into the exact specifics of the situation. McVoy more comes across as paranoid. Just as Tridge comes across as rather Militant. Its not nessecarily a bad thing on the case of Tridge, and more of a bad thing in the case of McVoy. I see Linus fending McVoy off of Tridge more than I see Tridge trying to incite McVoy by his statements. This analysis may be a couple of strokes over par, but still fair IMHO.
Tridge is a bit of a Militant in my opinion. I understand his position, and to some extent might even aggree with it. However I do not believe that people using non-free software to be "living in sin". Thats rather asinine.
It is the nature of creatures to denounce that which started one way and then attempts to adopt an opposite stance. I am fairly confident that if M$ went purely Open Source with all of its code , that there are hundreds of Slashdotters that would find thousands of conspircy theories on this issue and unltimately dog M$ for trying to do it, no matter if M$ was trying to do it to stay in the industry "honestly", a question thats asked daily here.
Again, M$ trying to take advantage of whats out there already. The only thing worse than a software Cloner , is a Software Cloner that does it out in the open. Come on M$, try to "innovate" a little.
Actually what would be realistic here is for Debian to decide to develop just a base, and let the other debian Reduxes -- Ubuntu included , build their own dists. This would aid Debian in releasing qualified and speedy releases.
The only disctinction that I can find is that MEPIS runs KDE by default, something that Ubuntu doesnt (good ole Gnome). Of course Kubuntu tried to correct this oversight in an attempt to appeal to KDE userbase.
The only other real insight into switching, is that the package base might be a little more stable than MEPIS, but not being a MEPIS user, I cannot avow to that entirely.
Thats why you pay out licensing fees every two or so years for what is commonly refered to as inferior product. Am I saying that the alternative is better? Of course not, the vulnerabilities that occur with in the *nix community is great, sendmail a clear example. All im saying is that my choices in OS are patched faster, better, and cleaner with few possibilities of down time and constant reduxes of the same fix to cure security issues that should have been caught at the start.
Admitting that you use a Gentoo box , probably dont game on it and if you admit to using windows as your main point of productivity, then there is the likelyhood you used an old box to do that build on and it took 5 days to do it, and all it does is sit there as a token monument to your inability to use what most consider a better alternative. Open Minds are what motivate the world, not closed minds that spend time worrying about whos right and whos wrong.
I dont have double standards. I dont use windows unless I have to or have no choice, which honestly is about 4% of the time.
Course if you used VidaLinux to build that Gentoo build with, then you lost my total respect there, not that you had it to begin with.
Tubgirl.

So really its a trade off.
Who can argue....not I.

You are probably more likley correct than not.

Astaro is a solid implementation, I almost prefer it, but if you dont like it.....then....see below.

Thats a long time, almost meets M$ standards.

Sucks......nuff said.

Your Not, a worker in my office bought a copy. And actually tried to install it, go figure on that one.
I wonder if it will have the factual evidence about Al Gore inventing the internet............
hmmmm....points to ponder.

Just offering an alternative. Appeals to some, may not appeal to others. Users commonly will pay through the nose to get support.
Got an old workmate that works there. They do pretty awesome work. Well that and FauxPas likes ubuntu, and thats good enough for me.

Ive had no relative problem. I find unbuntu to be refreshing, stable, and without alot of problem.
