    Ford was raised on a farm.

    He knew perfectly well that what people wanted was a tireless "iron horse" with coach or wagon that demanded minimal care and expense and could be out on the road in an instant.

    The Ford Model A could cruise safely and comfortably at 25-45 mph on a hard surfaced road, but these were almost non-existent outside the larger cities in the early days.

    It is not a gated community, but I live in a suburban cul-de-sac that is generally regarded as safe and secure. In no small part, of course, because there is no through traffic.

    It is a really, really bad idea to try an end-run around the residential zoning laws here. Your neighbors turn on a dime and come at you with knives and pitchforks at the ready.

    Windows - the most insecure OS in the world. There are probably more viruses, malware and ransonware than actual apps.

    I doubt it.

    Download.com alone hosts over 51,000 Windows apps. Search Results for all Windows, Sourceforge, 16,000, 2,200 certified Fresh.

    Amazon.com 22,000 for retail sale. PC Software

    You could make a very strong case for Android being the most insecure, incompetently planned and managed OS in the wild.

    Google's position is complicated, because it has produced a platform that it has no power to update. There's no Windows Update for Android phones, and Google has no ability to push out updates to the operating system; it has to depend on a range of OEMs and network operators to adopt its source code changes and distribute them to users. Both Apple and Microsoft, in contrast, have a direct channel to update their mobile operating systems.

    Having a way for the 2 year old to call for help on her own in such situations could make a tremendous difference

    Unless of course it is the two year who gets hurt when Mom has a seizure.

    Her seizures aren't under control. That is in the first line of the post. Once you admit that, you need to go with a care plan approved by her doctor, and the pediatrician who cares for your kids.

    There can be nothing harder in the world.

    My wife is epileptic. Her seizures have been well controlled by medication until recently

    An infant, a toddler, and mother whose seizures are no longer under control.

    There are no technical solutions for a problem like this.
    You can not and must not ask a two year old to be caretaker for her mom. She is not there as a backup for your webcams or to care for your baby. This is a huge red flag for child protection services.

    What you need is are licensed home care aides or nurses, with full time coverage when you absent from the home. If you want to avoid institutionalization for your wife and kids this is your only option.

    They really aren't 'developing' anything, sure putting together a nice interface takes work but they really aren't doing anything a determined user couldn't do themselves.

    and now you know why the UI of an open source project sucks rocks.

    It doesn't matter if the engine purrs like a kitten under the hood if you can't find the ignition or work the clutch.

    The determined user is almost by definition someone with a problem to be solved and no time to battle an intransigent UI or hack out a solution of his own --- even if he had the necessary skills.

    Why does the geek always assume that "keeping our servers in countries hostile to US law enforcement" translates as "we won't mine your data for our own purposes or quietly sell you out to agencies foreign and domestic when the price is right?"

    I am not expecting the FBI to raid me at any time, but just out of caution, I have my computer encrypted using Bitlocker (yeah, I know) and all data at rest is stuck in a hidden TrueCrypt partition. If I want to access it, I have to sign in separately.

    It would be idiotic for Microsoft not to trademark Windows 365 whatever its plans.

    Microsoft reported a 128 percent year-over-year growth for Azure and its other commercial cloud services, including Office 365 for business. Home users of Office 365 (now numbering 7 million, Microsoft says) also edged up 25 percent over the last quarter.

    In some ways the Office 365 figures are more significant than the Azure numbers, since they hint that one of Microsoft's most intractable customer groups -- users of the desktop, on-premises Office suite -- can be transformed incrementally into cloud users, and from "transactional purchasing to annuity" (read subscription) customers. Microsoft has made wise moves in that area, such as offer more granular Office 365 subscription deals for small businesses. The basic Business SKU, which includes the full Office desktop apps, is now $8.25 per user per month for up to five devices per user.

    I always find it interesting to see how the geek frames his "slippery slope" arguments.

    "Kidding porn" is a new one to me.

    You said that if we allow A to happen, then Z will eventually happen too, therefore A should not happen.

    The problem with this reasoning is that it avoids engaging with the issue at hand, and instead shifts attention to extreme hypotheticals. Because no proof is presented to show that such extreme hypotheticals will in fact occur, this fallacy has the form of an appeal to emotion fallacy by leveraging fear. In effect the argument at hand is unfairly tainted by unsubstantiated conjecture.

    Example: Colin Closet asserts that if we allow same-sex couples to marry, then the next thing we know we'll be allowing people to marry their parents, their cars and even monkeys.

    They don't care about users freedom what-so-ever. All they care about is market share.

    The product that can't stream protected media has no market --- which means that it can't and won't be used to introduce DRM-free streaming media to users.

    Many premium content providers such as Netflix require DRM support. Matchstick has undertaken the mission to develop DRM as an independent project with the open source community...We plan to use the Microsoft PlayReady technology and are excited to bring premium content to Matchstick.     There is a lot to be said for a standardized DRM platform based on open-source code. Time is short, It is becoming almost impossible to buy an HDTV without integrated WiFI and its own suite of apps.

    I would think any improperly obtained evidence should be contestable...I'd like to hear a lawyer's opinion on the subject.

    I am not a lawyer.

    But it comes down to the fact that a judge's deepest instinct is to insure that all relevant evidence is laid out before the jury so that they can make the right decision.
