why would a company who makes spyware (who's very nature is to be secretive and hard to remove) want to follow Google's principles?

Free advertising baby! Screw ethics. Tomorrow's headline "Spyware agency agrees to Google's 'Good Guy' clause". Then can then follow that up in 2 weeks with "Spyware agency break Google's 'Good Guy' clause". And a few more weaks "Spyware agency makes amends with Google and their 'Good Guy Clause'".

A million free hits, zero effort.

Let me get this straight: 60 years ago a mathematician used a different word that's not spelled the same but sounds a bit like google when spoken -- although I'd like the see a pronunciation key for googol -- and now they're claiming that google got their name by drawing on the inifinte wisdom of the bloke the just kinda pulled a word out of his ass to represent 'one million gajillion billions'.

What I want to know is how poor of mathematician was this guy that his crowning contribution to math was the word 'googol'? Or better yet, how incredibly stupid is the son to think his dad's crowning contribution to math is the word 'googol'?

As an aside, do they think it could possibly be the case that google got its name from other words... like maybe:

"go" -- 'to begin an action or motion' M-W
"ogle" -- 'to look at especially with greedy or interested attention' M-W

Hmmm... 'to start looking with interested attention'? That's just silly... of course they got the word from 'one million gajillion billions'.

The XBox is designed to not run any unsigned code. The modchip is a circumvention device for this protection whether it's the Cromwell or a more nefarious BIOS. 4. Re:Yes, and MythTV on Modded XBox The Ultimate Multimedia PC? · · Score: 1

MythTV is a niche piece of software best used on a dedicated PC. Assuming you use it at least similar to a TiVo then the machine will be recording like hours a day and most likely during prime usage time. On any but the most high-end systems encoding 640x480 mpeg4 at 3mb/s in realtime is a little taxing and doing anything major on the system will be... difficult. That's why it's "HTPC" software. Home Theater PCs are usually fairly dedicated to the Home Theater. I don't really see that as a drawback to Windows users as once the machine is set up, it probably shouldn't be used for much else. No it's not stupid-simple to set up but the setup is a small price to pay for what you get.

If you're looking for a one-off digital VCR, MythTV is probably a bit overkill.

  5. Here's some more things to do with your X-Box... on Modded XBox The Ultimate Multimedia PC? · · Score: 1

There's a ton of stuff this great little box does that are beyond it's original intentions. I'm talking a modded XBox here so everything in the list will be of questionable legality.

Emulation: There are Mame/NES/SNES/GBA/etc. emulators that work stunningly.

Linux: In all it's glory. Web-browsing, mail checking, document editing, picture viewing, etc.

Media Playing: They covered XBMC (which is capable of network streaming, DVD playing, etc.) and the MythTV frontend is friggin awesome.

StepMania: It's a free version of Dance Dance Revolution with a bazillion songs available online as well as the ability to make your own steps.

Online Gaming: Any game that supports System Link (XBox to XBox play) can be played online through a tunneling service (XBConnect or GameSpy Arcade).

Diskless Gaming: Copy your games from their disks to the harddrive and put them in protected storage.

Spare change and some very basic skills let you create your own adapters to hook up a mouse and keyboard to the box or hookup the XBox controller to the PC as a joystick. Even if you hate the games, the XBox is easily worth $200 ($150 for the machine and $50 for the chip).

Absolutely, MythTV is the single best HTPC piece of software available. The XBox MythTV frontend works great. I don't have the HD kit but rumor is Linux (and therefore MythTV) on the XBox works in 540p.

My main Myth machine is connected through DVI to a 55" RP Mitsu. The XBox makes a great portable frontend.

I can't buy a car without a stereo either. Does this mean the car manufacturers are engaging in monopolistic practices, forcing their crappy car stereos down your throat?

Well, yeah. If every manufacturer shipped the same stereo and the stereo company threatened to stop selling them stereos if they tried to ship any other stereo with any of their vehicles, that would be fairly monopolistic.

Or if the stereo that everyone shipped could only tune in stations that the manufacturer approved so the stereo company could rule the radio station biz. That might do it too.

Or if the stereo manufacturer used special CD laser techniques that only they knew about so the CDs they released using this technology sounded better than other CD maker's disks in order to strongarm their way to higher CD sales. That could be a case.

But this is all speculation. And, of course, very little of this would be illegal if the stereo company didn't have a near-monopoly.

There may have been one more course I'm forgetting as I think we were 2 courses shy of the 30 hours needed for a major.
