I'm not meaning to sound cold hearted but yesterday alone 30 Iraqi's died, a US soldier was killed, and 50 civilians were injured in a single set of blasts. That didn't make slashdot. My wife's grandmother passed 2 months ago. A friend of mine's father died this summer. And just a few weeks ago a friend was diagnosed with Leukemia. Nothing on Slashdot about them nor do I expect there to be.
These are all great tradgedies but if everybody was going to mourn every death that was barely tangental to their lives we'd never do anything but mourn. All due sympath to the family of the deceased but this is 'Slashdot News' because RMS was almost one of the guys.
iPod was a small next step in the evolution of the mp3 player. It just happened to be on top when the market burst. Yes, the uptake of mp3 players was slow and most people thought they were geek-only before but fundamentally there's not much special about the little white box other than it's stylish... and it's only stylish because people say so. I still think people are half cracked to buy one. There are players out now that are higher cap., cheaper, and higher quality.
Personally, I had a 32 mb Rio back when Diamond made them. It was the first common mp3 player on the market.
...creating holes and backdoors in these services will lead to exploits of those holes and backdoors above and beyond our kind benevolent government. Only a fool thinks that ISPs and government are above the curve when it comes to hackers.
So because they didn't poll at 15%, the Greens and the Libertarians can't make monkies out of the Demopublicans and the Republicrats.
Damn straight. Michael Moore is only one man. Bill O'Reilley is only one man. Rush Limbaugh is only one man... ok, maybe a man and a half. They all make monkeys out of their respective parties. It's kind of sad though when right wing-nuts and socially mal-adjusted documentary makers get more respect and attention than two people legitimately running for president and trying to fundamentally change our government. I'll still be voting for Kerry though:(
So the guy who decided how the scrolly-wheel on the iPod ranks higher than the guy who decides what makes it into the Linux kernel? If this were "Marketing Weekly" or "Style" magazine I'd be all over Jobs but that's not the case.
Creating an idiot program that just pops up a webpage that says 'Go to Windows Update' is very much stretching the definition of useful. It analgous to our 'terror threat level' color-code shit. Oh, bloody hell, it's red. Be afraid... be very afraid. We're not gonna tell you what to be afraid of, but do it, damnit!
And yes, I see that your post was a joke but I had to take a stab at the beautiful rainbow of terror we have here in the States.
Will the level 7 computer you bought today be a level 5 tomorrow? Or will they just keep tacking on numbers... By next year we'll be at level 11520?
If you ask me, they should have levels depending on your competence with a computer... A Level 1 machine has a locked down "Windows dummy edition" on it that automatically blocks anything stupid and equally idiotic hardware. A Level 3 would be any Mac or Windows XP preinstall locked down enough that you can't hurt others but can fuxor youself pretty good. A Level 5 comes with a nice Fedora Pre-Install on decent hardware. A Level 10 with the parts in a big box and Gentoo's Web Site.
But we're fighting terrorism and uncovering huge amounts of WMDs with that money... no wait... err... Osama took the nukes from Iraq before we got there. Yeah, that's the ticket.
Most PS2 and XBox games don't even use both layers of today's DVDs. The only one I recall encountering is Rallisport 2 and it was only like 6.5 gig or so. What this does seem likely to do is drive up the production cost of the games and system, however this probably won't translate to higher game prices as competition will even that field.
"fantasy vapor product that doesn't exist and even if they funded it's development there's no guarantee the thing will exist by election time"...I don't want my tax dollars bankrolling OSS dev efforts.
Instead we're spending billions on a missile defense system that never existed before the government asked for it. More than that, we're rolling it out and it's not even matured enough to perform a simple f'n test?! It's not like we're talking about a new commission or chair-level position. Slice off a million, hire some of the many talented out of work programmers, and in 3 months build a system vastly superior to the crap churned out by the monkeys at Dibold.
I WANT my tax dollars spent ensuring fair elections. That's step #1 in any real democracy.
'Deinterlaced' implies you took interlaced footage and doubled and smoothed the missing lines to get to the final 480 lines. Most DVDs are progressive and have a full 480 lines of resolution which is what you were getting at. Of course you have to have a progressive scan DVD player and a TV that can accept progressive input before it's of any use.
I can't find a firewire TV-Capture card. Yes, there are Firewire vid-cap cards out there by the dozens but I can't find anything with a tuner on it.
Hauppage, probably the world sales leader in PC-based tuners, doesn't seem to have one nor does ATI. Looking through the newegg and tigerdirect catalogs as well as a google search I can't find a single firewire capture with a tuner. In the same vein "why the hell aren't they making these?!"
On why he brought it out now: "A lot of people are getting very worried about piracy. That has really eaten dramatically into the sales. It really just came down to, there may not be a market when I wanted to bring it out, which was like, three years from now."
What? Every place I look claims DVD sales are very stong and not losing momentum any time soon (mainly thanks to idiots like me who buy 2 and 3 versions of the same crap I already own). Regardless, his decision boiled down to cold hard cash... not fan appreciation, not the desire to allow us to preserve the movies in a non-degrading format, not the desire to give us a higher-resolution better mastered version of the movies we love. Screw that, he needs cash.
On the altered footage: It's like this is the movie I wanted it to be, and I'm sorry you saw half a completed film and fell in love with it.
Wow... what complete and utter contempt for his most die-hard fans. "Screw you, this is what I like." "Screw your support for the past couple decades, this is what I want." Hate to tell you, Mr. Lucas but both your originality and your integrity have gone steadily downhill since those first 'incomplete' Star Wars movies. It's become painfully obvious that instead of a compelling storyline you'd prefer fancy effects. Instead of well developed characters you'd prefer good looking twits and CGIed alien idiots. It may be age or greed getting to you but make no mistake, you didn't release these special editions because they were the 'movies you wanted to make.' You released them so you could slap "New Special Effects" and a media-whoring poorly CGIed Jabba scene on the box cover and make a mint. Maybe, just maybe everyone fell in love with your movies because they were, you know, good. And just maybe we're all bitching because not only are you releasing movies that aren't any good but your destroying those that are.
On the future of Star Wars: "Ultimately, I'm going to probably move it into television and let other people take it."
Well, this is a bit of a mixed bag. On one hand, Lucas seems to be relinquishing control to someone who may possibly have some talent. That would be cool. On the other hand, we all know this is a last ditch pimp out to squeeze every little bit of cash from his cow. I can only hope that the TV series takes place in a land far far away from the trilogy's universe. There's not enough material in a movie to have a multi-season tv-show intersect with the same characters and timeline without seriously affecting the story. At this rate I wouldn't be suprised to see some "Leia: The Teenage Years" pushed on the ignorant masses.
And finally:AP:"Do you pay much attention to fan reactions to your choices?" Lucas: "Not really."
Just because an article picks on both candidates doesn't make it balanced. Money caters to those with... err... money. Much more-so the top 2% recieving the largest tax breaks than those of us working for every dollar.
On a side note, ever take a look at the candidates tax returns? In 2003, amazingly Bush made most of his money on *gasp* oil and Treasury Notes. A large bulk of Cheney's income came from *shocker* Haliburton payouts. Kerry, on the other hand, made a large sum of money by selling art however he hid his wife's earnings by filing seperately. Regardless, I don't think it would be far fetched to assume she didn't make her money off of war.
Is this picture slightly askew or just plain crooked?

The RPM seems to work just fine. Maybe the problem is on the other end of the keyboard.
Today, yes. But when the innocent cheerleader (Linux) says no to the big bad football player (IBM) how quickly will that fondling turn to date-rape?

Unless the 3 it'll be running are Love You, Nimda, and Blaster.
Mods? I think he was making a joke.

Funny, my copy of Windows is rock-solid as well, and the power cord's right where it's supposed to be.
I see you are like me. Your copy of windows is securely on the shelf right between "Computers for Dummies" and "How to speak AOL".
After all, 640k should be enough for anybody.

maybe it's the withdrawl of vast amounts of pornography they're reacting to.

Ahh... the rub. Ingenious and insideous. I'd put my money behind that theory.
