    Who is this for?
    NOT EVERYONE!

There has been so many threads about people saying this is not good for them. Well, you know what, then it isn't. This distro is for the people that want to have everything up to date. It won't be the Best distro in the world since the combination of all the different apps you are installing has not been testing, but it leaves you with something that is setup the way YOU want it setup, not the way some developer over at (insert distro name here) decided to do it.

It's amazing to see NVidia's dedication to forwarding their technology and continually improving a seemingly perfect line of cards, but with all this power, are we running out of an application to utilize this power?

You have to realize that game developers limit the actually quality of what they are producing. To use more of the graphics card, all a company like sierra would have to do is boost the number of polygons they use to make up walls/players/whatever. They could also improve the lighting effect to use more of the graphics card for processing shadows of objects.

If you ever try and go writting some 3d graphics yourself, you would be amazed how limited systems actually are. Game developers use a lot of tricks to increase frame rates and keep everything running smooth.

There is always need for improvement.

Taking part in running a course, all teachers can do to try to stop it, is to change assignments from year to year. But that can only go so far. I know we also have a simple program that compares students assignments for parts that look alike. It has been used to find some similarities, but not many.

Here is the problem I have with it. I beta tests Diablo 2 before its release. It spoils your enjoyment of the game. It's great and being able to play a game before anyone else, but when you play a game that is well (I think) for online play, and you are playing with suck a limited crowd in a beta, you will get burned out. As I did, when playing D2 beta, I played it so much, that when it came out, and I got a the final release of the game, I was already burned out. There was no enjoyment really left.

I did research for sterio equipment in december, so I have some input here.

When shopping I did the usual of going to best buy and just playing with their speakers and all that fun stuff, but I did not get a good feel for everything. So I jumped over the the local United Audio Center (now owned by Tweater). They have a great setup to test all the fun audio equipment. (Side note: you CAN haggle prices at United audio, just get an idea of prices from the web for the same product, and go to work).

I tested different recievers with different speakers with different subwoofers. In the end I ended up with the Yamaha RX-V596 reciever, 4 of the Klipsch Synergy 8.5 speakers (like a 6" midrange plus a horn), and a Klipsch KSW-12 subwoofer (12" cone, 400watt, with 105watt amp). I already had a JBL HLS-Center speakers.

Now how this compares to the rest. I played with JBL, Bose, Sony, Yamaha, Mirage, and Klipsch speakers. I do have to say that I was fond of the JBL speakers, but I could not find what I was looking for. The Klipsch are WONDERFUL speakers for someone like me (college student). They are made so you can turn your system up REALLY loud and not blow out the speakers. All Klipsch's come with a build in horn (tweater), which makes it quite nice, and if you look at the rear channel speakers, some come with a dual bi-polar horn system with a midrange... Really nice stuff.

As far as recievers, I went with Yamaha since I got more bang for the buck. Looking at Pioneer, Sony, Yamaha, and Dennon, I liked the Yamaha the most. The Sony and Pioneer look cool and all (nice interface and front displays), but you do not get the power that you would with a Yamaha of the same price. The Dennon's did not see to be that good, the company just makes really nice high-end receivers ($2000 for a reciever... NICE STUFF!!).

List price for the synergy 8.5's is like $300 or so, I payed $150 each, so that was not too bad. The sub is listed as $500, I paid $450, you could pay less the $400 if you shop. The JBL center I paid $170 for at bestbuy (its really nice, handles well), the receiver I also paid $450 for. Plus you gotta through in like another $100 to get all the nice cables and such. Grand total without the center was about $1700.

I am happy with it all, now I just need to master placement of everything to make it sound cool.

  19. The problems of college CS clases on Coding Classes & Required Development Environments? · · Score: 1

I am in the same boat, freshman taking entry-level c++. I had experience through high school taking Computer Science AP classes, so I know what I am doing. In our class, we have to be able to make our program computer under OSF/1 or HP-UX, using g++. I do have to say; using g++ makes me feel so much more at home.

Now on to the point. You have to keep in mind college classes. I don't know the full setup of your college, but as with mine, my CS228 class is a lecture. Meaning, there is a shit load of programs turned in. I don't know how many classes the instructor for the class actually teaches. Also with the department getting a budget cut, we currently have no TA's to help out. You also have to keep in mind, when you start getting into pointer manipulation or anything beyond basic C, you can run into small variations in the compiler or in the libraries. I wrote and compiled a program using Visual C++, and then moved the code to my Slackware box, and then tried to compile it with g++, I got an error in the passing of a variable. After a little tweaking of the code, I got it to work. But imagine if the instructor had to do this for 300 people. If he was getting code that would not compile, I don't think that teacher would want to check the code to see if it's some strange error. As they do here, if a program does not compile, you will automatically get a 0 for that program.

I truthfully think that the compiler is not that big of a deal, unless you are being taught API, or GUI programming. I am not sure of other colleges too, but as far as I know with 2 of the colleges that I have information on their Computer Science major, they focus more on theory of programming then actually programming. Learning and language and the commands for that language are not truly as important as learning the theory behind programming. You can work with C++ your entire college life, and when you go out into the real world and get a job, you could be programming Java. You have to spend a few weeks to learn the general syntax for that language, but as you start learning you will be like, "WOW, I remember this stuff from when I was programming C++". Then you just have to apply the theory of programming to the current compiler you are using to make it work.
