Spam filters, certain ISPs, hotmail, etc, will often just delete mail, not bounce it. With no bounce, they just know it didn't bounce and will keep using that address. however, when you click the opt-out link, (or even open some emails that have images tied to dynamic pages) you just verified with 100% certainty that they have found a real, in-use, and monitored email address.
you have absolutely no way of knowing what "more americans wanted". All you know is how many voted. A LOT of people don't bother voting in my state because it is a forgone conclusion that Republicans will win in my state. 16% or so vote. You know what that 16% wants, but you have no idea what the rest want.
Tipper Gore proposed stickers on music that would indicate when graphic sex and violence was on the recording. I was against it at the time, but I was also a teenager and very much in love with the recordings that she wanted my parents to be warned about. If my mom knew what was on some of those tapes, I would not have been able to buy them, so I was against Tipper.
However, there was much, much worse censorship happening at the same time. Many foreign journalists were kept out of the country because of views that had about America's involvement in Nicaragua, among other things. These law (bill? order? rule? not sure) was made by and for the Reagan Administration as a CYA measure to keep those "in the know" from coming here and spreading the truth. It was also used to keep out certain "dangerous" rock bands. One of which was The Pet Shop Boys (or was it Depeche Mode? It's been a while), one of the least "dangerous" bands I can think of.
and in other news, the things that Lieberman has proposed are also far worse than Tipper's ideas.
even if you were able to rid the world of the "suckers" you mention above, there are still enough of us informed, educated, intelligent users who simply prefer Microsoft Office to its competitors to outnumber the users of OpenOffice, etc. Then you can add the informed, educated, intelligent users who simply don't care either way, who will normally go with the easiest, which is probably MS Office.
BellSouth adds its range of IP residential IP addresses to spam blacklists in order to keep its users from running spam factories at home. I found this out after all of my emails to a friend were bounced due to my IP being on that list.
(1) it would also be a huge profit maker for US power plants (2)would help move people from dependance on foreign oil (3)would keep the profits in the US.
I am still trying to figure out why American electric companies aren't all behind electric cars.
not only because they distort the worth of companies by allowing some to stay afloat when they need to go under, but more importantly, they create a flow of income that is quickly taken for granted. This is bad because there is no such thing as a free ride or money without strings attached. And this leads to compromised content and/or the eventual end of that money stream. If businesses are relying on government money, when that money disappears, what happens to the businesses? My city's arts funding was cut one year not too long ago. The art community acted like it was the end for them. I realized what a terrible thing it is to rely on money from something as shady as the government.
then the user won't have to disable the tabs. The browser will function as normal except when the user wants to use tabs. Every click opens normally unless the user shift+clicks or something similar.
your girlfriend had to be shown how to use tabs the first time she saw them? How many other things confused her the very first time she ever saw them? Probably a lot. Internet Explorer (or Netscape) required a little instructions for most people I know the very first time they saw them.
Of course, one has the choice to never learn anything new and stay exactly where they are. For now... eventually progress will be forced upon us.
but, like many others, it can get lost because there are so many new features that users aren't used to. Once they get used to them, it's hard (or impossible) to go back.
so that it starts up with the windows that were open when you closed it or so that it prompts you and asks what how you want to start. I had it set (before I finally gave up on its bugs and uninstalled 2 days ago) to automatically open with the pages that were open when I last closed. Sometimes it helped me recover from accidentally closing the whole program, sometimes it recovered my windows from an Opera crash, sometimes I closed it on purpose knowing that I would be able to start where I left off later.
that button is great, actually. you can tell spam the second you see it and instead of opening it, you click "report spam" and it blocks the address, deletes the spam, and sends a note (with your optional comments) to AOL. It's almost as easy as clicking "delete" so I think that a huge percentage of spam is being reported. One-day totals don't mean a lot because users don't check their email every day, but overall, I'd guess the percentage is very high.
I charge my customers depending on the size of the client. Huge medical conglomerates pay more (per hour and per project) than my next door neighbor or my favorite local band.
International businesses charge Americans more than they charge someone who makes $2 a week.
people are giving up on the internet because it's too much trouble to "wade through" spam? This guy should stop being a whiny businessman and start whining for a living as a lobbyist. I would mod him Troll if possible.
stock prices are not a reflection of a company's true value. Stock prices are a reflection of the demand for that stock. Amazon is a great example of why you're wrong. What was their stock price in 1999? Start at near $100 and cross that line twice. in 2000? A steady decline from around $100 to almost as low as it was at the beginning of 2002. And now you're gonna say that their $9 gain last year shows the company's value?
stock prices show the value of the company's stock as measured by demand for that stock, not the value of the company.
for example, read the transcripts from some Turing Tests. A.L.I.C.E. is asked is she's a robot and she answers yes. What genius even bothered entering her? [ahem, Dr. Wallace] Eventually the test could be passed by correctly predicting the questions the judges will ask and programming lies and avoidances
Q: "what is the sqare root of 49357823948562345?" A: "how the hell would I know?"
Q: "are you a robot?" A: "um... no... what is this, an AOL chat room?"
I actually mean "Outlook" and Word. I use Access for work purposes, VBA stuff, Excel because people send me things in that format, but for the most part, when I install Office on my PCs, it's for Outlook.
When I installed Open Office, I was very disappointed to see no Outlook, for some reason, I thought everyone else considered Outlook to be the cornerstone of Office, like I did.

Microsoft Windows 2000 Server, Standard Edition, with 5 CALs = $999 suggested retail price.

and, although I believe that OJ is guilty, it was not proven anywhere close to "beyond a shadow of a doubt".

saying "Christians are not ashamed of sexuality" is like saying "Canadians are not women".
You're right but you're just as wrong.
every dance club in this city charges $4 for a bottle of Disani.
I don't because of hte lack of time and the fear of being sued/losing my reputation after I forget to remove it.

and make them hang out with you and your programmer friends for a while. Maybe they will start picking up your good habits and get laid occassionally.
until then, i must print in order to read on my sofa.

the letter said to remove the word or indicate that it is a trademark. Seems like a no-brainer to me...
