I think the point is that use of CCTV cameras in public places isn't an invasion of privacy, because there is no privacy in a public place anyway.

So then you won't mind being stripped naked, having everything you purchase being shown to everyone at all times, and having your entire life outside private buildings being broadcast to everyone Truman Show-style, then?

I live in Middlesbrough, and actually there are tons of little cameras in the town centre that are very well hidden inside those little silver domes in the roof. As far as I know, they have even better hidden ones that I haven't seen.

    I don't agree, that's a completely false dilemma.

By that logic, if you don't worry about stepping on ants, you shouldn't mind some giant race stepping on and killing hundreds of humans. There's a very easy way to get around the difficulty of experimenting on animals. It's something like, "humans (and animals more advanced than humans, we don't know of any yet) are fundamentally more important than any other kind of animal, and that means we can afford them fewer or no rights." Might sound like a cop-out, but it's one I tend to take. The alternative (worrying about all creatures' rights) is too much of a pain in the ass, and to be fair, they don't worry about our rights either.

The ISP doesn't have to provide 'unlimited' internet access; the term is referring to the amount of monthly transfer allotted. The maximum kb/s * seconds in month will naturally determine how much they may have to offer. It's more like a cake company saying they'll provide you with an 'unlimited' amount of this chocolate cake they just made, but actually secretly preventing you from eating more than half.

I think it's worth commending Virgin Media whose cable broadband service, as far as I can tell, is the only 'unlimited' service in the UK that ACTUALLY provides you with unlimited download bandwidth. It's not even capped in the fair use. This probably has a lot to do with BT's charging ISPs per megabyte to use their precious telephone network.

4 GIGABYTES should be enough for anyone.

No, really, this isn't a Bill Gates joke; aside from gamers, things are getting absolutely ridiculous if the average user needs more than this in the near future. Even video applications and Photoshop, etc. don't need 4 gigs to function perfectly.

I remember talking to a guy, a few years ago, who had 4GB of RAM in his web server so he could load a large DB into memory. I remember thinking how enormous that figure sounded. How absurd that anybody is seriously suggesting that more might be needed for general use PCs soon.

I think I can see the other point of view on this one, though.

Look at the value part of the product.

With a chair, the value part of the product is mainly in the physical materials used to make it, and the labour used to manufacture it. If one is having to reproduce a chair, they're basically having to pay (in money and also perhaps significant time) for the large majority of the value part of the product.

In digital/computerized products (a musical recording), the value part of the product is almost entirely in the semantic 'design' of the product; the wave samples, or whatever. If you copy this, you're not having to pay for the large majority of the value part of the product.

Whilst I detest the overzealousness of the enforcement of IP laws (and the laws themselves to some extent, eg. copyright expiration being way too long), I think you surely have to realise the difference between where the value of the product lies in these different cases.
