Hamburgers. No ham. It's a strange world in which we live. You should try going to Germany and ordering a hamburger anywhere other than McDonald's. You'll find that hamburgers, in the country they come from, are, indeed, made of pork, not beef.

I've got a MacBook, too, and the squares look different to me as well. At first glance, the second one seems to be seemless, where the first one has obvious banding. However, you can see the banding on the second one as well, if you glance from one side of the screen to the other, while your eyes are moving, rather than stationary, fixed. I guess that's explained by the "time dithering" rather than "spacial dithering". Up until I read this story, I had no idea that such a thing even existed.

You've heard of parity files, right? The same technology, Reed-Solomon encoding, is used on DVDs for recovery of scratches. A radial scratch may remove bits from many files (into dust, even), but it will be seamlessly, automatically recovered by any decent drive, if it was burned properly to begin with.

The problem is that many DVDs barely work when they've just been burned, because it's counting on that error correction just to read the files without any physical media errors... just burning errors by poor hardware/firmware.

Frankly, if they're able to get it working, they will have taken away pretty much the only reason to run Boot Camp.

I bought my Macbook the day they came out, and the palmrest had turned from white to dark grey within 10 days.
You remember the story, but do you remember the conclusion? Apple admitted to a manufacturing defect (where they neglected to apply a coating of some chemical), and repaired the affected machines, including mine. Now it's been over 6 months, and still looks like new.

  13. Get rid of catch-all on Bot Nets Behind Recent Spam Surge · · Score: 1

I've been using a catch-all for years, but the spammers finally found out about my domain about 6 months ago, and forge it as From: my domain, and the bounces have been coming to me as well. First thing I did was implement SenderID/SPF, hoping that would at least make a dent in it, but no luck. Finally, I took a few hours to go through my email and manually add forwarders for every address I've given out (many 100s), and disabled the catch-all. Not only will I not see the bounces now, but the spammers will have less luck using my domain, since more and more servers implement sender-checking and can reject the spam before it's even sent, as your other reply mentioned.

Actually, without the error correction technology, the tiniest speck of dust would completely freeze your video or music.
After re-reading your post, it sounds like you're suggesting an additional layer of redundancy, but with the way the discs are encoded with error correction right now, an unrecoverable scratch would probably take out the backup, too.
