  1. Re:I'm suffering more from overload than anything on How Good Software Makes Us Stupid · · Score: 1

I really wish a lot of these on-demand stuff would have a random or station mode.
Often I know exactly what I want and exactly when I want it (now), but sometimes I feel like finding something new or just wanting to go through my recorded shows or whatever is available. As long as I can constrain it (no reality TV) or add a algorithm to the mix (I like this kind of stuff, I don't like this kind of stuff) it should be fine.
Think like the random button on your iPod, video isn't much different than music and I want a flow of shows like what I have with music, think what I have recorded on my DVR I recorded it because I wanted to see it, but not necessarily in any particular order give me a station of my shows that I have recorded. Same thing with Netfilx give me an option of just choosing a movie or show for me based on my history of reviews and watched, it may be interesting on what it picks up.
In my opinion when the show that you're watching ends and drops you back to the menus or it stops and you get the delete/keep prompt, I think is wrong, and that it should just continue along with a new item that you may have queued or saved, if I don't like it I will skip or go to the menus myself and find something else.

Anyone care to wager if it were a man like George Bush who had lead the colonies to victory rather than Washington? You think it all would have gone the same? Somehow I think that if there where a man like George W. Bush at that time, he would have been a British loyalist and call for the deaths of the American insurgents Washington, Jefferson & Adams, and would have even claimed victory and that it was 'mission accomplished' after the capture of New York.

Crack quite possibly, but also could have been had.... UMAX did make Macintosh clones, a loong time ago way back in 1996. Before Steve came in and killed the whole practice. At LEM they have a write up from 2002 on getting OS X to work on the hardware, so it is not too far fetched to say that you might have a UMAX computer with OS X, anything further than that is BS. Keys... never seen it on a Mac OS (never touched server, so can't say anything about it). I did recently notice that Apple has computer specific install disks that come with their computers. I had an OS X install disk from an iMac that I tried to use to upgrade a G4 with, and I got an error saying that I couldn't do that. They may have been doing this for awhile, but this is the first time I've ever ran in to it.

I usually will code all my SQL/FoxPro queries in all caps, it usually looks cleaner and clearer to me. But I can understand others that may see it as useless space, and I could adapt to it being in another place.

I think we should kill the 'INSERT' key first, which is the bain of my existence. I personally do not know why anyone would want to be typing over what is already typed. It kills me every time I go for the 'DELETE' key or 'BACKSPACE' and accidentally hit that key, and go back to regular typing and see what I have already typed be overwritten.
I also think that maybe it is time to get rid of the home number keys on extended keyboards, they are unnecessary and redundant and you have to add an extra key to get to the extended chars. While I am talking about this, who decided that the '('')' should be a sub-key vs. the '{[''}]' that gets keys of their own?? I don't think that I ever used those, yet I'm forced to work harder for the more common key.

Do you honestly think that your have to rate your music ever 4 minutes?

You don't have to, but the very easy functionality is there if you want to.
The size of libraries that you can have, means very likely that some songs that you may love may be lost/forgotten. So on the occasion that you may be listening to some under-discovered music it is extremely easy to give that song a + when you may be wanting to hear your favorites.

I think you are missing a second great feature of rated music and smart-playlist. You can make lists that have been tagged with "Death Metal"; 4-5 Starred Rating. And have a play list "Easy Listening"; 4-5 Starred Rating. In fact I have a playlist that goes something like this: Tagged "Industrial", "EBM", "Electronica"; Not in Playlist "Goth"; 3-5 Starred: Not been played in the past week; Playcount is greater that 4; Limit to 4 hours most recently added.
Can't you see the versatility of this? You can save time with this, rather then creating a playlist from scratch you can create rules for the music player and it will pull the music that you enjoy and want to hear according to that.

    Starbucks?? Dress code??

This might have been in one of the stores, but at Corporate or rather the 'Support Center' in Seattle there's almost no such thing.
Starbucks is one of the most liberal corporations hailing from one of the most liberal American citys. Starbucks often has some the most top left-wing speakers at company events, Hillary Clinton has been there, Al Franklin has spoken, and even Bono not too long ago. I even got Samwise/Sean Astin to sign my LOTR Special Edition, when he came to promote his new book.
Let me tell you the dress code is very laxed, I've seen tats, piercings, colored-hair, everything.
I've had of the security guards at Starbucks tell me that in his previous jobs, he could easily tell who belongs or not by usually by the way that they dress, but not at Starbucks. When he first started he says that he stopped a guy that he thought couldn't ever be someone dressed for work at a company as large as Starbucks, to the surprize to the Rent-a-Cop the guy wiped out his Starbucks Partner Badge.
Starbucks indulges in its diversity much more than any other company that I've ever been to.

I just bought this DVD player at Amazon, and I'm really happy with it.

It plays nearly everything; DVDs, CDs, DIVX, XVID, MP3s, Don't think it plays Ogg though. All you need to do is burn it to some CD-R or DVD+-R and put it in, just like a regular DVD.

No need try to teach someone the intricacy of a networked home theater system, that's still more of a geek project right now, and costly to boot. Far easier it is to just burn it and tell your wife/mother to put in the DVD player.

I used to have to s-video to my TV in through my laptop for all the times my wife missed her Survivor. A thing she would always need my help to do. Now I can just burn the show to a CD, and I don't have to be there to deal with it. It's Great!

In other words, YOU MAKE FUCKING MONEY BY USING THIS SOFTWARE!
It's an investment, if you can't invest money into you're own business for software that will allow you to make more money then maybe you should look back into your business model.

Now I know from personal experience, that some software companies realize that for some people you can't get them to pay, no matter how cheap or what you do you are still not going to get some people to put up some money, and they will always find a way to get your software for free. THOSE PEOPLE ARE NOT THEIR CUSTOMERS.

The game is to make it easy enough process for those that do pay, and difficult enough to not make it an easy process for those that don't.

Software companies do offer lower price offerings for their wares as well, that is what "Education Pricing" is all about, in fact the only reason there is a price to those boxes is give value to the software. Most software companies would love to be in the hands of everyone who is learning a trade such as Graphic Arts, Accounting, and Design. Because they know once they graduate and go to work (i.e. make money), those people are going to want the same software they learned from, and will be future customers.
