And what if someone simply uses GIMP (which probably won't include this kind of DRM until it is a law to do so) to replace one of the circles in the pattern with, say, white noise?

Do we really need ANOTHER soundserver in addition to esd and arts?

Well, maybe the fact that MAS is supported by a display server helps its popularity so much that there'll be a standard for sound servers soon. By that i don't mean MAS should be the standard, but it might create enough pressure for standardizing soundserver interfaces. That'd be way nice. So maybe it's not really THAT bad an idea.

Predicted? I think the current dial-up situation employing dynamic ip addresses is far from perfect, and it resulted from not having enough ip addresses for everybody.

It's like your snail mail address changing everytime you come home.
IMHO, Having static ip addresses even for dial-up accounts would for example make higher-level "lookup" services such as aim/icq superfluous and would also help distribute traffic in a more geographically optimized fashion, thus potentially saving billions of $$$ per year...

Actually, the idea of booting dumb clients from a central server in order to prevent permanent changes to the system's data is not new and this concept is being used by many universities and enterprise campuses. Together with mounting the user's home directory from a fileserver on the network this makes for a pretty safe "work on the first machine you encounter" environment. But this is not the original purpose of ClusterKnoppix, it is all about utilizing the computational power of many dumb clients to perform number-crunching applications and similiar. But one could probably derive a special Knoppix livecd for your proposed purpose from ClusterKnoppix (if there isn't already one) by taking the OpenMosix stuff out completely and adding a bit of user managment and login service stuff...
