Personally, I think of cell phones and beepers as leashes - plain and simple.
I used to think that way until I got one. Now I think it gives me more freedom than anything. I can roam anywhere and anyone that needs me can get in contact with me. I have caller ID on my phone and if I don't want to talk to that person I push a button and send them to voice mail. If I don't want to be bothered at all I turn it off or silence it.
It is really no different than a regular phone if you treat it that way. Don't give people your cell number, give them your phone number. I don't tell them that I'm giving them my cell number and they never know the difference. Simple, but then again I don't have a hard line at all.
If you reguard anything as a leash then that is your own fault. When I don't want to be reached I turn it off. In fact my moble just rang and it was someone I didn't want to talk to. I just pushed a button and sent him to voice mail. Pretty soon I'll upgrade my phone and it will voice mail them for me or even better just tell them I don't want to talk to them at all.
Sorry my friend, but that don't hold water any better. If your GF thinks your out cheating because you don't answer your cell phone, then it's time to get a new GF. If she don't trust you then you have other problems and that is not the fault of your cell phone.
As for your boss. I don't see where it would matter if you had a cell phone or a regular phone in that case.
I don't find that to be a problem at all. One battery on my Nokia lasts about 2 hours of talk time and I've had it on standby for a week with out recharging it. And that is with the standard NiMH battery. I've got two of those, when one runs down I just pop another in if I need it. You can get spare batterys from ebay for $19 bucks and that is the LiON ones. You can even get a battery with 14 hours of talk time and a 40 hours of stand by. Don't have one of those and don't think I will.
When I moved last October. I needed a phone. I looked at the cost of installing a hard line where I was staying and the cost of a cell phone. I compared what I needed in a phone and how I used it. Installing a hard line would have been $129 and getting a cell phone was only $119. After I added all the features that I would need to the hard line my bill would have been $65 a month. With my cell phone I got all the features I wanted plus the flexablity of a cell phone for $67 a month.
For that 67 clams I got Caller ID, Voice Mail, Call Forwarding, Detailed Billing, and Call Waiting. I have 450 minutes of "primetime" use and unlimited nights and weekend use. During the day it is a business phone and at night is a personal phone. Thank you BellSouth!
As for coverage. I'm covered 99% of the places that I go and I live in Alabama to boot.
I moved out a few months latter and I still don't have a hard line. As far as I'm concerned I never will.
Further note - shouldn't the Coppertone people / all the others who carried their ads, be charged with distributing child pornography for their shameless display of a 4 year old girl wearing only a pair of swim trunk bottoms?
It is already happening. Several artist have already been proscuited under child pornography laws for taking nude pictures of children. Sally Man I think was one of them. There is a difference between porn and tasteful nudes that some people don't understand. Not all nude pictures, even those of children, are pornography.
Are you using EXT2FS? I hope someone doesn't pull the plug on you, it probably won't come back.
What kind of crack are you smoking here? I've put the ext2 filesystem through hell since it's been out. I've never seen it not recover. Damn man, pull your head out of your ass before you post.
Starring George Burns, Art Carney, Jack Lemmon, and Walter Matthau
Now this would be a feat. What the hell are we waiting for? Lets get the paddles and dig up the old fossil. I'm pretty sure if we pumped enough juice into his dead ass we could get the old ticker started. Better bring a fire extingisher just in case.
I can see it now. "Hey George! Wake up damn it! We need your moldy ass to save Star Trek."
Hey! I got it! Lets mate Star Trek to ER and see what kind of spawn from hell we can get.
Don't feel bad spiralx, it happens. I slipped in to AC mode a few months back and posted the most most outlandish thing I could think of. Everybody agreeded with me.
How can you act like beowulf is useless. Beowulf is one of the most powerful technologies developed recently. Why do you think people like IBM are making these giant beowulf clusters?
Let me see if I can translate here. I think I know what he said. Beowulf is great for doing massive parellel projects like partical caculations and nuclear weapons tests. You can break those down into smaller subsets and feed them to different processors to do smaller work. Like what seti is doing now.
But beowulf sucks, and I agree, when it comes to something like playing Quake.
Since I think I was the one who came up with the ideal of using stainless steel disks for archiving I'm going to comment. I'm not going repeat my entire ideal here. If your that intrested in it you can search/. for it.
In the orignal ideal I called for placing important information about our society and culture on stainless steel disks and archiving them on the moon. Placing them on the moon served two functions.
The moon's environment is a perfect place to store shit for long terms. Things placed there will last billions of years.
Only a moderatly technological advanced society would be able to retrive them. And that is just the moon archive. The other archives would take a real advanced society. Such a society wounldn't be intrested in melting them down for something like sword.
Not if they are smart. This might just be a god send for them. From entirely thier point of view that is. If I was a oil company CEO I would be making these dudes and offer before the ink is dry on the patent. Not to scarf up the patent and have it vanish to but put bucks in it and make it commercial process.
This would be a win-win for them in the long run. They can dump the basiclly hunt and gather approach that has marked the oil industry for the last 100 years. They are living on borrowed time anyway. The oil in the ground is only going to last so long, then what? The process would basiclly do away with the oil industry as a environmental problem. Good press there.
As a county we can drop out dependance on OPEC and take the teeth from that tiger. The US could reduce it's military budget because we wouldn't have to spend so much defending what is basiclly a big sand pile. International terrorizem would drop because, well without the big oil cash cow, they can't fund it.
Most important question nobody seems to be asking is why did he feel the need to screw with a excellent language like C to produce this bastardization call C++?
The only way to get his attention (and modify his behaviour) is to smack him between the eyeballs with an [economic] 2-by-4.
Where I come from 2x4 are made of wood. Wood as in the type that grows in the wild in the form of trees. Now I relize that most of us have never really been outside and think that trees are a myth. But let me assure you, they are real.
But back on subject. Being a southern boy by nature I like to think of myself familar with most types of trees. I've never heard of one of these economic trees. Since I've never heard of it I must assume that it's some kind of northern tree. Since it's a northern tree I must assume that it is naturally infearor to a southern tree.
Let me send you a good old piece of southern pine if your going to be wacking any mules. I assure you that you will be getting better results with a southern 2x4 than a northern one.
I'm just now starting to follow this topic but from what I see we might be going about this the wrong way. People seem to be trying to stop the bill from being passed in all states. That is a enormous task and bound to fail. One state is going to pass it and it will become law there and in the states that is doesn't pass it can be reintroduced next session with a precience that it has passed.
What I think needs to be done is let the bill pass in one or more states. Then attack the bill after it has became law before it's enforced on consititutional grounds. If the law can be ruled unconstutitional on the federal level it is dead in all states. Also if the bill can be killed in a state court then other states are most likely going to not bother with it.
Also if the law is deemed unconstitutional there is not much of a chance of a law with simular wording getting to the state floor much less getting passed. I cite the CDA as an example of this. Law makers simply lose intrest in it. They passed it once and the courts struck it down, no use in bothering with it again.
Having it ruled unconstitutional kills it once and for all. Dead.
Yeap, time to give it up. It's ether scattered all over the landscape or it landed in the equlivant of a martain trailer park and right now is being parted out.
"What the hell is it M"ukk's? Don't put your lips on it!"
Woohoo! I guess this makes me a super-genius. I was able to setup ipchains in less than 1h, in my first month of using Linux. You just made my day!
I don't like it but I'm going to have to say it but MS stomped a mud hole in our ass when it came to the ease of setting up multiple boxes on one isp modem. I witnesses some friends this weekend setting up a multi-session set up like this almost first hand. I say almost because I wasn't really paying attention. I was to busy exploring this friends 40 gig harddrive with 15 gig of porn^H^H^H^Hsource code on it.
But in less than 10 mins and passing passing around one floppy disk they had the whole room of PC's routed throught this one box.
I don't believe it! A company announces and demo's a fairly major step forward in chip technology - running a really powerful processor as speeds of over 1 Mhz without any fancy cooling systems, and you want to know how fast it'll play a game?
Hell Fucking YES!! Fuck specs and fuck MIPS. To hell with Mhz and GHz. Well does this bad boy Quake? In the long run that is all that matters.
I remember those days before the web. When the net ment email and usenet. I remember when there was under 7,000 newsgroups. Most people only had one account and that was provided by your employer or school. Lossing that account was only slighty better off than death.
I remember killfiles. I have a saying, "on the 10th day he created killfiles." I remember every September that sound would echo from every corner of usenet, *plonk*. I remember the culing of the killfiles. Every December you would pull the lid off the killfile and see who had been "enlightned" and who hadn't.
Them where the good old days. Now where did I put my teeth?

aheam... bull cookies! I've used my 6120 on both circuits, analog and digital, with out a hitch.

And just how is xv crippleware? I mean you have the source and can edit it yourself.
When I first started reading theses comments I though our annoymous coward here was just simply mislead by his fundamitalist brain washing.
I must admit I was wrong. Your just an idiot.
That episode stank so bad the dog farted and I thanked him for the fresh air...
I made a comment on something like this a few weeks ago. Here is that original ask slashdot. Just do a search for Deep Archiving
