So let me just straighten this mess out for all you people that are lucky to live in the 'land of the free'.

Running an insecure wireless network is a crime.

So lets fix this... oh no wait... discussing security issues relating to said wireless network is illegal under the DMCA. (assuming theres even a tiny bit of copyrighted media on it)

Truthfully I think litigation is pushing the US technology sector into a downward spiral. Something is going to break soon, it will have to.

Its obviously time for new tactics, Elftor style ;)... "Hooray!"

Well if you are talking maritime salvage then the convention 'Lloyds Open Form' is generally half the value of the vessel. (The owner has to agree to this of course).

Basically ring them up ;) im sure they will be quite happy to pay half the value of the satellite :> in fact hell, claim the whole value of the satellite, they are considering it a write off... they'd be happy to avoid more launch fees and the money they are losing while they dont have a sat up there.

but you would never own it... i dont think 'flotsam and jetsam' applies to space ;) regardless though, they know where it is... its um 'parked' in orbit.. still theirs... its not lost or anything :>

Im sure if you called them and asked if you could have it, just so you could say that 'I own a satellite' they would be very happy to get the liability off their hands ;)

OT: In fact a long time back it was convention back in some mediterranean ports to have local lads offer 'to help you moor at the jetty'; then these kids would claim salvage of a few hundred bucks... which holidaymakers would pay to avoid getting their boat impounded while the kids uncle harbourmaster lethargically investigated :D...

This is where the whole Open Source / Free (as in beer) software idea breaks down. All for one and one for all, socialism is very very nice in theory, but the fact is people get greedy.

I want to have my cake and eat it too.

Right now i can get the latest linux iso, and have a fully working OS. Sure, I _could_ donate some cash, but lets face it... I dont have to, and as beer is not free (as in beer), I would much prefer to spend the money on beer.

So there it is. The net result is that donating to all these nice people that are fighting for my rights, writing me software, etc, for no charge would be a nice thing for me to do. Unfortunately i think most people cannot be bothered / are greedy / dont agree 100%.

I think this is similar to where the communist ideal breaks down... greed. Simple.

    * Disclaimer: well if i wasnt such a poor student I might actually support such things.

  9. Re:Level playing field on Microsoft vs. Modded Xboxes · · Score: 2, Informative

This depends on the game, and the level of 'trust' the server has in the clients.

In the good 'ol days, the clients replicated to everyone what they were doing, and everyone trusted them implicitly. (Yes I did jump 200ft in the air, honest.)

Later with the server being the authority for much of the game state (a la Unreal) it made it harder to implement obvious hacks (such as your character running faster, taking no damge when told, etc). Hacks still abounded though in the form of wallhacks (see players though walls), and aimbots (autoaim)... these things being client-side of course and impossible for the server to know about.

Decent games these days, such as UT2003 which has built in anti-cheat from the CSHP guy keeps mucho things on the server. Many effects and such are replicated to the client to be simulated proxys and actors such as an enemy player are only replicated if they are relevant (ie: the player should be able to see it). This works well against wallhacks, as the client only is told where an enemy is if it should be able to see it.

Unfortunately we have a situation similar to copy protection, there is allways going to be ways to work around... at least now its not as simple as dumping the unrealscript sdk and modifying some variables.

Still the more objects that the server has authority on the better. Your hacked client interface might tell you that you have 900 rockets left, but the server knows better ;)
