    Yahoo needs google because it isn't a search engine. It's an index, maintained by human editors. They sell it as "the best of both worlds". You get human-filtered stuff in yahoo, but if you want something so recent that it hasn't made it through the editorial pipeline, or something so utterly obscure as to not warrant its own category, you can use google.

    In hotbot's case "powered by Lycos" basically means "owned by Lycos".

    Sure I can. It's a pain in the ass to wade through the postings of people who are playing catch-up with the conversation, because they don't use the URL out of principle.

    The tools to be an informed part of this dialogue are in front of the guy. He's refusing to use them. I'm justified in telling the person that that's irritating.

    If I walked into Calculus class and asked the professor to teach me how to add, the prof would get pissed off. There is an appropriate level of conversation, and that ain't it.

    The fact that slashdot's readers feel a particular way doesn't give them the option of using Andover's resources. I'm sure Slashdot readers read many webpages. I read CNN, but don't feel entitled to send CNN's legal department to do my bidding.

    Your post didn't make any reference to the Slashdot community. It referred to "your corporation", Andover.

    Perhaps my navigation skills are lacking, but I would have loved to see a picture of the tiqit, but couldn't find one on the site.

    How about that site design? While it is a bit of a nice break from the dry, cookie-cutter traditional sites, it was a bit frustrating to swim through their new-agey copy to find the facts.
