  1. Yeah, I know Re:Eh?? on Can Hayao Miyazaki Save Disney's Soul? · · Score: 1

For what it's worth, that factoid was embedded in a quote from Berkeley professor Russell Merritt. Didn't think I needed to factcheck it, but I should have--it's obviously based on out of date information.

  2. A clear, concise articulation of the arguments... on Kansas Challenges Definition of Science · · Score: 1

Check out this site for a great (and very civil) set of back-and-forth essays on this topic by ID proponents and evolutionary biologists, first printed in NATURAL HISTORY magazine; it also provides suggested links for further research by all participants in the colloquy. http://www.actionbioscience.org/evolution/nhmag.ht ml

  3. Video Googlebombing! on Al Gore Invents Internet TV · · Score: 1

Wow, this opens up a whole new way for people to abuse Google--if you can get enough people to search for the same thing at any given time (or if you can virally distribute a script that'll do it for you) you might *conceivably* be able to get something on the air. Have they really thought this through? Imagine a couple million computers across the country bombing Google with some ridiculous or obnoxiously commercial search request (Golden-Palace.com, maybe?) j

  4. "Quite Attractive" on Forbes Predicts 5% Desktop Share for Apple in 2005 · · Score: 1

It seems kind of unfair to reference Ms. Rosen up front as being "quite attractive," just because she has a nice portrait of herself next to her quite well-written article. You must know that as a result, many /.'ers are going to click over there to scope her out...while ignoring the article entirely.

It strikes me that there's a bit of gender bias lurking here--I mean, do you see people referencing the "devastatingly handsome" John C. Dvorak or the "toe-curlingly sexy" Robert X. Cringely?

    ...

    Oh. Right. Sorry.

  5. Orbitz is owned by CENDANT on New Orbitz Terms Prohibit Inbound Deep Linking · · Score: 1

It was purchased about a month back from the consortium of airlines that had founded it. Cendant is a giant "nothin' but brands" company that specializes in franchise operations--they own Budget, Avis, a bunch of hotel brands, Century 21 (the real estate brokerage), etc., etc. They also have a travel division that owns Orbitz, CheapTickets.com, and so on.

Plus they're a major player in the timeshare business. They own RCI (the biggest timeshare management and swapping enterprise; the other one is Interval International).

    For what it's worth.

  6. Accountability? GIVE ME A BREAK! on FBI's New Info-Sharing Software Project Fails · · Score: 1

We've spent hundreds of millions of dollars in a fruitless search for weapons of mass destruction in Iraq as a part of a war that cost billions (and thousands of American/"Coalition" and Iraqi lives), and not only was Bush handily reelected, but he had the gall to give Medals of Freedom to George Tenet, Paul Bremer, and Tommy Franks--the three prime architects of this utter disaster. Everyone who's given this administration warnings, cautious advice, or contradictory evidence against patently absurd assertions has been targeted for demolition. This administration doesn't know the meaning of the word accountability. Heck, Bush probably pronounces it "accountamability" anyway.

  8. The perfect +5 post? on Winning Critical Acclaim · · Score: 4, Interesting

Has anyone done a study analyzing Slashdot moderation patterns with the aim of creating a template for the "perfect +5 post"?

Seems like every other critical medium has been vivisected using lame-ass statistical meme-mapping techniques, so why not this one? Go to it, muchachos. There must be a dissertation in there somewhere.

Nice. It's fun to rebut arguments with ad hominem attacks on the intelligence or personality of the author and/or harmless third parties, isn't it?

However, you're right about one thing--the apparent reference to "direct Web download" as a peer to peer technology is an editing error. A comma was deleted--the original read "...peer to peer technologies such as Bittorrent, or direct Web download"--thus making it clear that I'm not implying that the latter is a peer-to-peer technology.

  10. Slugging Average (offtopic) on Mitnick Calls for Hacker Stories · · Score: 2

    >Actually your batting average would be 1.000. 1 at bat >divided by 1 hit = 1 Totally offtopic. Bill James would slap you in the head. The original poster referred to "slugging" average, not "batting" average. If you were up once and hit a home run, your SLG would be 4.000 and your BA would be 1.000. Batting Average = H/AB Slugging Percentage/Average (SLG) = (H+2B+2*3B+3*HR)/AB Sports may be anathema to most Slashdotters, but sabermetrics oughta be geeky enough for anybody.
