Dude, Windows XP is just as bad. Try finding a program you can install and run without administrator priviledges. There are quite a few you can run (i.e. Outlook Express, Microsoft Office), but a lot of ones you can't (TurboTax, The Sims, FAIK every game out there). Windows XP is a step in the right direction, but without the ability to run as a non administrator for a normal user, it's security "features" are worthless.
Note the italics on non administrator. People are probably going to try and point out that you can click on a program and "Run As" (which doesn't work for every program), and other little tricks to get XP to work right. But XP needs to work right for EVERYBODY out of the box to be effective. Period. End of story. Grandma isn't going to understand why she needs a separate administrator account, and will just use administrator all the time.
In Nevada you play on a "at will" basis, i.e. casinos can throw you out at any time for any reason. In Atlantic City they have to play you even if you count cards, so they'll just shuffle every hand -- which not only takes a long time it makes it impossible to count cards.
Actually there is a federal law that mandates a return policy. So you've got to choose a return policy, post it in someplace obvious, and stick to it. However, nothing prevents you from posting a "ALL SALES FINAL" sign right above the cash register.
Hmmm...they must have changed it. I can remember a time not so long ago where AUTO_INCREMENT didn't work under Postgres. Regardless, there are plenty of other examples of things you can do under Postgres that you can't under MySQL which would be a problem...
No, actually I use Pear DB when I can, but I've had to make things work on client machines before which didn't have pear available but wanted the database work in PHP. So in the end I had to go back to calling mysql_connect() etc. as if Pear DB didn't exist. And, no, reconfiguring their server wasn't an option.
. Try using that on a Postgresql database and it will break (or any database that supports the SQL standard). So you're right if you're talking about very simple stuff, but not for any serious programming.
The DBI in Perl is a way to access all types of database using the same Perl functions -- i.e. so you don't have to remember how to execute SQL on a MySQL database, Postgresql, Oracle, etc., like in PHP -- because in languages like PHP they all use different functions. However, you still have to send SQL to the database and that SQL has to come back. To my knowledge, no one has implemented a DBI wrapper to transform SQL so that it confirms to each databases peculiarities.
Microsoft pays WinZip for the technology behind compressed folders. Quite possibly they got it for something like $0.02 a copy of Windows by putting it this way "License it to us for cheap or we'll sue you into oblivion"
Actually, with the success of the RIAA and MPAA getting the DMCA passed, I would not be surprised if they started lobbying to require P2P networks to identify users in order to make tracking down pirates feasible.
You're absolutely right. Employers are responsible for checking that universities are accredited, and if people are hired without checking the background of a college that nobody has heard of before but by calling up the "university" to make sure they got a degree from there, the problem is with checking accredidation.
If you find a site that looks shady and you want to buy something, do a google for the site name and scam. Do this for other things too -- I managed to find out a real estate conference I was looking to attend was little more then a scam doing this. Besides that, if you don't do your due dilligence, make sure to trade on reputable sites, or sites which don't have protection (i.e. ebay offers you protection for some $$$), you deserve what you get.
Hoovers.com allows you to search for businesses, including the assumed name a company may be operating under. If the company pays taxes you can get informatin on them, although if you haven't paid money for the service they will ask you either to buy a subscription or a report. Still, the Information you'll find if you search their site should give you enough leads to track down the business and let the FTC know who to go after.
My biggest pet peeve on slashdot is the following method to karma whore:
Somebody reading the article / OP hits reply and types in something that is worth modding up. But lots of people have already replied so it gets posted as the 50th comment or so.
Karma whore reads it, says "I want to be modded up".
Karma whore goes to first or second post that's highly modded up, hit's reply, types in reworded comment.
Mods see Karma Whore's comment first, mod him up and mod the person who posted the thing earlier down.
Karma Whore = 5 Whatever. First person who posted it is now -1 Redundant
Well there are different levels of control so you are right. In pharmaceutical terms, a controlled substance is something that you need to fill out lots of paperwork to use and subscribe, and requires a doctor's prescription and not a glorified nurse (as opposed to antibiotics). (LPNs which are one level of nurse above RN can prescribe antibiotics and other things for things like ear aches). Also, controlled substances use prescription papers which cannot be easily faked. (About once a month we'd get somebody into the pharmacy who had used a copier and some white out to turn a prescription for antibiotics into something more fun. However, things like morphine required a form in triplicit that has a lot of security features of checks. That's why we'd end up sending em to rehab via a Marshall.
You knew this, right? Ok, I'll go back to work...
Yup, that's why we're so badly designed. The "stupid die off" was supposed to be tongue in cheek,:D. Don't work too hard, slashdot needs people like you.;) 99% of the time when I am corrected I needed to be corrected.:D
Rolling your own through a shell script shouldn't be hard. MPlayer supports grabbing video and compressing it on the fly (see link). So create 2 shell scripts, one to switch files for each camera (have an alpha and beta file), and one to backup the files to your favorite media. Then run a cron job. Every hour (or day) switch the files and do whatever you need with the files. It should even be possible to create redundant copies across the network, so you can keep a copy safe.
Was the guys cache filled with child porn or something?
How does looking at porn make you a sex offender? If it's illegal then arrest me right now.
Some explanatory paragraphs from the article:
"When I used search engines, sometimes I got a lot of porn pop-ups," Jack said. "Sometimes I was sent to illegal porn sites. When I tried to close one, another five would be opened without my will. They changed my start page, wrote a lot of illegal porn links in favorites. The only way to stop this was turn the (computer's) power off. But when I dialed up to my server again, I started with illegal site, then got the same pop-ups. There were illegal pictures in pop-ups."
Security experts who were asked to review Jack's claims said it is possible that a browser hijacker could have been the reason porn images were found on Jack's computer. But they also pointed out some discrepancies in the story.
Some of the images were found in unallocated file space, and would have to have been placed there deliberately since cached images from browsing sessions wouldn't have been stored in unallocated space.
Brian Rothery, a former IBM systems engineer who has been researching Jack's claims, pointed out that a significant portion of the images and URLs cited in the arrest papers are from fairly tame nudist sites, as well as adult sites that do not contain illegal materials.
I have to agree that choosing Kerry is the lesser of two evils at this point. I really wish that there were better candidates available to pick from. However, I do think that if we leave Bush in office he is just going to trash our constitution, encourage more blatant violation of human rights, and piss off the rest of the world even more. At least under Clinton people liked him and liked us. Bush's war on terror is counterproductive in that as other countries learn to hate us even more then they already do, they will be more beligerant and we will face more attacks.
Controlled substances are labeled as such because there is a large danger of abuse. I used to work at a pharmacy, and generally these drugs were narcotics (i.e. morphine), and things that could be sold illegally (apparently there is quite the black market out there for valium), and things which are very easy to get addicted to (i.e. OxyContins). Most of these drugs fit into the category of things people pop for fun. However, I can see people popping this drug in order to lose weight. It's a well known fact weight loss drugs are dangerous, but how many people bought ephedra based pills after phen-phen was outlawed?
I really hope we never get to that point in our society. Do you vote democrat? Let's get Kerry in office and make sure our leaders respect the constitution. Also, email the president, and the vice president to let them know where you stand on the issue. Politicians follow votes, and although I think Bush's religious leanings may make it unlikely he'll listen to democrats about a lot of things, I think enough polite emails could help temper him.

nVidia cards come with the nVidia desktop, which allows (among other things) you to use hardware acceleration to turn windows translucent.
