Bitcoin value as an anonymous way to pay for things is dubious at best. Every transaction is logged in the blockchain. It is easier to trace then cash. The real advantage is in frictionless payments (i.e. cutting out money processors like visa, paypal or even western union). You should take the time to learn about something rather then spewing out your nonsense. The bitcoin protocol itself can even be leveraged for other uses besides currency. There are many many legit uses of bitcoin. You can buy all kinds of legal goods with it and is not diminished because criminals use it. With that line of thinking we should outlaw cash which is ridiculous.

Nobody uses cold hard cash anymore, except people who have a reason to hide where their money goes. E.g. drug dealers and pirates.

See how easy that is to turn around? There is a need for a currency that can be used without giving a cut to major payment processors, I am surprised that you cannot understand that.

  6. I don't know. The source may be as clean as freshly fallen snow. I usually download the binaries and trust that it is clean. Most likely fine but who really knows. I don't have the skills (or time) to do a whole audit of the source and then compile it myself. So I stay away from obvious problems out there and trust things like virtualbox to be clean for my personal use. I also trust that this open source project has many smarter people then me looking after these things. That is the beauty of open source in my opinion, it's just more trustworthy. But I still don't give it "ultimate" trust.

I will still use VBox for my little uninteresting personal needs. Maybe a nice Hi NSA motd or desktop wallpaper.

Casinos post all odds on house games. Any sane person knows the odds are against them. There is no deception. The average person who goes to a Casino goes with a hope of beating the odds and also having a good time. The atmosphere, friendly service etc etc. They budget an amount they can afford to lose. I have done it myself. Problem gamblers are mathematically challenged if they think they can beat the house. I think the only way you can possibly win long term is to cheat or play poker. In poker you only need to be better then your opponents, you don't play against the house, but they will take a cut with the rake. And to be clear only the very best make money at poker long term, the rest (majority) are donators.

As a long time stargazer I can sympathize with your neighbor and its pretty much the reason I moved out to the country. Floodlights are the worst, they illuminate every which way. Good lighting uses something to shield the light from going up and sideways and focuses the beam down toward the ground. We installed pot lights outside and use colored lights in them that are softer but are still plenty bright enough to see if you go outside. Also, there is no substitute for simply turning them off when you are in the house, although that is easy for me to say where I live. In the city some see them as a deterrent to people sneaking around their yard. You could always put your lights on a motion sensor as well I guess. You can google for outdoor residential lighting that minimizes light pollution. Check out a few astronomy forums, there are plenty of militant anti-light folks there that could advise you as well.

  24. Windows needs new branding on Microsoft Slashes Prices On Surface · · Score: 2

Windows in the consumer space is boring. Most people do not want a windows tablet or windows phone, because it represents that old boring desktop software to them. I think Windows should live on as the companies enterprise brand because the enterprise likes safe and boring and will continue to pay big bucks for that. What the consumer wants is exciting and edgy and that is why I think their consumer products just need a total rebranding. I am not a marketing guy, I am an IT guy, but it just seems obvious to me that they should dump the windows name for the consumer space. Since Xbox seems to have some traction maybe they could brand around that theme in some way for all consumer devices. But what the hell do I know, I am just a cubicle shmuck and maybe I don't get it, but Microsoft has proven without a doubt that they don't either.

So to access remotely you would have all of your stuff in your main building? What about redundancy and backups? Will this be the McAdmin's responsibility? I don't know but just provide me a port on your switch with a good uplink and a static IP and let's call it a day.
