Will this car also drive itself to Alaska, drill for oil, refine the crude into gasoline, and then fill up?

Turbine purchased AC back from MS. With rights to Middle-Earth and D+D Online, Turbine pretty much has a lock on MGORPG. (Massively Geek Online Role-Playing Games)

With those two titles and WoW on the horizon, MS is probably correct in assuming that Mythica would be largely ignored.

Yes, I do want an iPod competitor. It's called the Archos Jukebox Recorder, and I love it.

Does the iPod record analog or digital line in, direct to mp3 no less? No? Does it have easily replaceable batteries? No? Simple USB interface with no proprietary software to be installed? No?

On second thought, perhaps "competition" should be replaced with "superior product at less than 2/3 the price"

I'm not so sure. Suppose your "75 and Sunny for the next 72 weeks" forecast is interrupted by a "78 and Sunny"? People would call for your resignation I'm sure. Here in Buffalo, you could forecast "Sun and clouds, between 25-75 degrees in the morning, with a 47.3% chance of a rogue snow squall by 3PM. Possibility of thunderstorms this evening, maybe some clearing towards dawn." People would praise your accuracy =)

You *are* violating the ToS by running a mail server.

Tech support was unhelpful? What do you expect them to do, just say "Yes, continue violating our ToS. By the way, I'll just wave my magic server wand, and a hacked config file will be pushed to your modem with no blocked ports."

I've had dreams about handling calls that way; let me know when you find an ISP where tech support can push a button and solve any concern immediately, so I can put in my resume.

  10. Re:Default Service for Cable Modem Users on Cable TV A La Carte Part 2 · · Score: 2, Insightful

Wage-Monkey is an interesting term to be throwing around when you've just finished telling us that the tech was there because you "got unemployed".

The "wage-monkey" has every right to disconnect additional outlets that you aren't paying for.

You could also "accidentally" remove the trap on your line (depending on where you live and who provides your cable service) and get a la carte HBO. And by a la carte I mean free.

What you can do, and what is legal, are often two different things.

  11. As a "bandwidth hog" and cable ISP employee... on Cable Industry Taking Control of the Net · · Score: 2, Interesting

I don't see metered bandwidth being the wave of the future; but tiered packages most certainly should be.

    1) We already block port 80.

    2) If you tell us you're losing thousands of dollars a week running a home business (usually in a misguided attempt to get an earlier service call), and we don't like you... our TOS allows us to now charge you a business rate.

    3) Our TOS also prohibits your running a server of any sort for any purpose (yup, "business" too.) And yes, I realize the lunacy of this clause, but it stands printed.

For the vast majority of our customers, who consider themselves skillful after setting up Outlook Express and making the AOL browser work with "yous guys", the above three examples are non-factors.

For the minority who read Slashdot, who would max out a T3 if given access, who agree that blocking ports is dubious, there should be a different package with less draconian TOS.

If you want to charge me $100 a month, let me do what I damn well please with my computer, and change my upstream cap to a nice 256 kbps compromise, done and done.
