  1. Just bookmark news sites you visit 5 times / DAY on Google May Limit Free News Access · · Score: 1

Newspaper publishers will now be able to set a limit on the number of free news articles people can read through Google, the company has announced.

Under the First Click Free programme, publishers can now prevent unrestricted access to subscription websites.

Users who click on more than five articles in a day may be routed to payment or registration pages.

Seems unlikely that a lot of users end up on one news site via Google > 5 times daily. If it happens a lot, perhaps it will lead to users bookmarking those sites and visiting them regularly via bookmark instead of Google News. /speculation

  3. If pebbles pile up too high, planet flips around? on Exoplanet Has Showers of Pebbles · · Score: 1

Some interesting thoughts posted about nature of the "rain" - dust, pebbles, sand, liquid-filled crusty balls.

I had the thought that if the precipitate isn't able to redistribute itself back to the hot side some how... Well, it *must*, eventually.

So, what might happen - would the pebbles build a pile so high that it covered the entire cold side of the planet, with new debris sliding down the slopes back to the hot side?

If the precipitate were liquid, it would flow down 'til cooling or reaching the hot side.

If the debris precipitating from the sky were "sticky" enough to not flow, even as aggregate, and the pile on the cold side grew large enough, wouldn't gravity eventually cause the planet to "flip over", exposing the formerly cold side to the nearby star, beginning another round of rock vapourization?

    Anyone have thoughts on this?

    Cheers,

Even the circadian pattern is expected since the top alternate explanation (peroxides reacting with the medium used) depends on UV radiation from the Sun. My understanding is that the samples on the Viking landers were incubated inside the landers - no UV exposure; no circadian explanation.

Also, peroxides do not account for one sample giving circadian matching off-gasing while the sterilized one didn't.

Once again, life wasn't discovered even if life was responsible for the observations. How would life not have been discovered if it were responsible?

You can't rule out nonliving explanations for the observation. I haven't heard an explanation as convincing as a source of life. It's simple; it covers the observations.
