I must stop using that phrase, it's getting to be an annoying habit ;)
It wasn't easy to find one when I looked, but I must confess that was a while back and I didn't look everywhere. Just the more mainstream places.
For the record, I'm using an old ex-business phone which does precisely what I need and no more.

That would be the case if calculators ceased to be available. I don't know about the precise situation where you are, but I'd be willing to bet it isn't particularly easy to get a phone that just phones. Calculators, on the other hand, are easy to find.

''I think it is good to have a price tag attached to each use because it tells producers what consumers want; it lets them vote with their purchase for the kinds of culture they want.'' Maybe I'm missing something, but why is "voting with your purchase" the only way of letting producers know what's popular? To go a little further, why is "what's popular" so important anyway? Artists who produce because they enjoy it don't worry about this so much and corporations pumping out thousands of identical records are what we want to get away from anyway. ~L Wood

  9. Alternative to per-GB charges... on P2P Bandwidth Hogging the Net · · Score: 5, Interesting

One ISP I saw was meeting its customers half-way. There was a flat rate to use the service, which came with a monthly bandwidth allowance. There was a charge for every additional GB of data, but once this reached a certain limit (approx. equal to rival ISP's subscription charges) then all additional data was free. Light users paid a flat rate, medium users paid a flat rate and a little more in those busy months and heavier users paid a maximum. The ISP would benefit as users would be less willing to download data they did not really want, if they could save money by not doing it. In short, everyone's a winner.

The general feeling is indeed that there isnt much need for faster processors.
This article, however, has nothing to do with the general computer user. Its about having the fastest available chip on the market and running it faster than everyone else. While there isnt really a practical use for this, some people enjoy it (myself included. I tend to stick more to the "budget" end of things though ;))

I could use a car analogy here, but thats been so overdone I'll spare you.

Phase - Change cooling systems such as the one used here typically only cost around $700. Thats less than twice the cost of a high end graphics card and it can be used to supercool any processors released using the same socket system. In short, its not such a huge/useless investment as you make out.
