    I'm glad I bought mine a year ago, then... even if it did take me some time to figure out why my wireless network would randomly shut off.

    Apparently the router will shut off its wireless antennas if it determines another router on a different network is broadcasting on the same channel... and the neighbors were *just* close enough and conditions would be *just* right for that to happen every few days.

    In fact the part I quoted contains the only two mentions of Ireland on the page as it's displayed to me.

    I can only conclude that at least part of what you see on that page is determined by Geolocation or login status (I don't have a Facebook account any more).

    I think it's actually the reverse, at least currently. I believe the US is currently a first to invent system. However, there is legislation that is either going to be passed or may have just been passed recently that changes it to first to file as you described.

    I'm not sure how that would apply retroactively, though, nor am I sure what date such a change would take effect if it has already been passed.

    In this case, it doesn't matter, because if Carmack didn't figure it out until 2000, and Creative Labs filed a patent on it in 1999, Carmack definitely wasn't first to invent.

    No, but filing a DMCA takedown notice not in good faith is perjury according to the DMCA.

    Not in good faith includes such things as filing a DMCA takedown notice over the torrent where the only mention of The Box was the fact that one of the comments on the page for the torrent included the word "box." Which Warner Bros. apparently did according to the details of their current lawsuit. So is filing DMCA takedown notices over Open Source software.

    In other words, Warner Bros. has admitted to committing multiple felonies, each of which has a max sentence of 5 years prison time.

    I think we should apply this to each and every one of the board of directors and CEO.

    Yes, specifically OpenJDK is under the GPLv2.

    While I wouldn't put it that way, technically yes.

    However, the real reason is Oracle wants Google to pay royalties to them like all phones that use JavaME do.

    Because they make money from it?

    No, other implementations exist, such as IBM's version. JRockIt was another, but BEA was bought by Oracle before Sun was.

    Do we know why Oracle wants that?

    See: Sun Microsystems, Inc. v. Microsoft Corporation

    In other words, Sun (and their successor in interest Oracle) want to control the platform to prevent fragmentation, and they likely perceive open source systems not under their control as being likely to fragment it.

    I could be wrong though.

    As far as I'm aware, it doesn't have field of use restrictions, but it also doesn't include the code for building/running Java Mobile Edition (JavaME) applications.

    There still exists the cached link, albeit in a more discreet, harder to reach location. When you see the preview for a result, you'll see the 'Cached' link in that window.

    So, in order to use a feature I find useful, I must first enable a feature I hate? Thanks, Google!

    Speaking of features I hate, I see they're pushing out a new look for GMail.

    We keep hearing that the U.S. manufacturing sector is horribly depressed due to competition from foreign firms. There is an oversupply of cheap labor overseas and the U.S. simply can't compete.

    But we can clearly see here that there is a high demand for hard drives and not enough supply to go around. I wonder what the prospects might be for domestic manufacturing to start ramping up to meet the demand?

    No, but seeing as how you made half-assed assumptions about what he said, I'm guessing you do.

    Ramping up production doesn't necessarily mean building a new factory. It could instead mean increasing the number of workers at existing factories in order to increase output, particularly if they had already scaled back production due to market influences.

    Why don't the PS3 and 360 have something similar? Because they could certainly use it.

    Even a bump to 1GB would be very useful.

    The N64 had a grand total of 3 games that required it, made by a total of two companies: Rare's Donkey Kong 64 (bundled with the unit) and Perfect Dark; and Nintendo's The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask.

    Every other game there would get minor upgrades by having the memory pack.

    And before you say "You can hook up a gamepad to a PC," every console in this generation has USB and more than half have Bluetooth and games that support keyboards and mice, so that argument is moot as well.

    Even better, I have an adapter made by Microsoft that lets me connect up to 4 Wireless Xbox 360 controllers to my PC. Yes, let that sink in for a moment...

    In the US, it is sold with a 360 Controller on Amazon for $45.58. Be aware that Microsoft does not sell these without the controller. If you see someone selling the adapter without the controller, it means it's a pre-open package or used.

    The corporate media and the fickle public will NEVER digest a huge leak -- it has to be slowly leaked out over time so if we hear anything we hear the SAME bit of leak information at the same time everywhere and not too much that it gets skipped over.

    The West Wing TV show even had an episode called "Take Out The Trash Day" 11 years ago about dumping a bunch of stories out at the same time so reporters have less "column inches" for them.

    While "column inches" is now antiquated, it still translates into reporting hours.

    .... There are literally thousands of companies who have created time-zone databases in order to deal with the complexities that exists with all of this. So for umpteen years / decades this has not been an issue, but now in the wake of a gazillion copyright infringment lawsuits this company now claims ownership? Wow. This is just stupid.

    For values of "thousands" equal to "maybe two." Pretty much everyone uses this one.

    Except Microsoft.

    Cue "everyone of value." comment in 5... 4... 3...

    I don't know about where the GP lives, but in Michigan, highways/expressways have a minimum speed limit as well as a maximum. In 70 mph speed limit zones, the minimum speed limit is 55.

    No, this is Verizon. The only information they collect is the data they sell to advertisers unless you opt out.

    No surprise that Slashdot hasn't gotten a story about that yet, since editors tend to play favorites. I know I don't bother to submit stories any more because of that.

    If it was regarding the language, C is undoubtedly important (isnt it still one of the most used languages in existence, esp in the embedded sphere?), but was Windows even built on C?

    To my knowledge, Windows was/is built in C++. But again, that's heavily derived from C.

    For the consoles - you have to pay thousands to get a developer license, and then the console company decides whether to accept you. If you're a company without a track record in games, they'll reject you. Then you need to pay thousands more for the developer kit.

    Except for the Xbox 360, where anyone can buy a Windows PC, a developer license from Microsoft for $99 and start developing and release their stuff on the Xbox Live Arcade Indie channel.

    My personal preference is toward Samsung printers. They publish their own Linux drivers and haven't let me down in terms of reliability/performance.

    I heard Canon is suing them for making their printers shaped like a rectangle with paper trays. ;P

    As far as I know only about 50 million PS3s have been sold, some to upgraders / replacers / theft or fire insurance claims, so there's probably less than 50 million PS3 user accounts.

    As far as I know, PSN accounts are not tied to consoles, so why would upgraders / replacers / fire insurance claims have anything to do with this?
