My last job as a system admin involved tracking down the source of their virus problems. It turns out, samba shares were where 100% of them were hosted because the previous admin thought the same way. It turns out, the samba share WAS propagating the spread of the virus infestation passively by infecting a client when they opened a file then infecting every other file that client opened on the server.
ClamAV on the Samba shares as well as a strict workstation virus update policy resolved this problem. All of the Windows servers had antivirus on them all set up for automatic updates.

Enterprise installations are most likely going to have their own set of ports they connect to and what they deny. People like him and others on the right fill in the blanks and help you rationalize your own decisions. Details are always left out in national media and you shouldn't allow yourself to be spoon fed only news that doesn't make you angry. That goes for either side. The best rule of thumb, if half the news doesn't fit into 'I don't care' or 'That pisses me off and is so wrong', then you're listening to news biased to fit your profile.

There is a simple answer to this. The Cisco (or whoever they use) manufacturers that perform load balancing and fast data transfer need to go in, remove their gear, reimburse them, and say they do not want to risk infringing on their patent of allowing large data transfers at high speeds via load balancing. Oh yeah I guess the same goes for whoever they use for email, ftp, http, etc. Everything they use that matches this that they did not write needs to be removed. Offer them a 1M max file size dial-up until they design their own equipment to fit the needs of their patent.
