Actually, the pricing is $1299 US for the 15 inch, 1ghz model and $1799 for the 17 inch 1.25 model. The higher price quoted above is for apples best model, which gives more ram and bigger hard drive for a premium that even apple fans like me can't justify. 1799 is more accurate for what someone would buy.
Always remember, one of Bill Gate's great contributions to the world was to take something that was given for free and sell. A sucker is indeed born every minute, but he then goes on to clone himself exponentially.
You can't really take a pee in China without government sanction. If you think that rebellious feeling Chinese can just spontaneously gather and cary out a non-approved actiivty, then I have a nice prison cell filled with falun gong practicers to sell you. Get real.
When you look back at the constitution in its original form, only white, landing owning males could vote. In today's PC world, we attribute this to mere sexism and racism, and give it little thought. However, this does not explain the land owning part. Further study shoes that the framers of the constitution felt that only educated people who have time and knowledge to discuss issues should vote. Hence, the white male (now you can yell about isms!) part since it was thought at the time women were irrational and others, well, I won't go there. The land owning was used to separate out whites. If you owned land, you had money. If you had money, you could afford books/education.
This was all in an age before IQ tests. In a more modern setting, they have chosen those criteria. The honest debate could begin about whether this should be brought back. Afterall, many people in Florida could not read and figure out a ballot, so, they may have been on to something. Yet, IQ tests may not measure int. well enough, so I guess this is slashdot, it should be girlfriendless unix using males.... (Kidding, it's a joke people)
Below is a link to show the noise of g5. (a movie). Apple did something called engineering (imagine that in a pc!), to put in many noise reducing features. So, the boxes may be bigger, but you get less power consumption and less noise. It is almost as if you pay extra money, and get extra features. Weird, I know....
Sometimes, humor can fall flat, as my first post did, I suppose. But, becuase of the flame in this response (the obviously comment) I will respond with examples.
In the office 98 version of excell for the mac, if you made a graph, and wanted to change the options, the menu did not show up. If you guessed where it was, and clicked in that area, you could bring up additional dialogue boxes. Since making graphs is a not-trivial and common use of excell, this was obvious.
In MS, to this day, the defult for graphics is to float overtext. This causes an image to "bury" text making it unreadable. On top of this issue, this tends to cause the image not to be anchored to a place in the document, allowing it to wildly alter its position. Perhaps there are a few cases where this is useful, but they escape me. At the very least, this should not be the defult setting. Placing a small graphic in a word processing document is common and obviously not an obscure function.
Lastly, one for the PC. As released, powerpoint in microsoft office xp would spontaneously quit when selecting a link to a different slide in the slide sorter view. Again, this is a function that is one of the major features and uses in powerpoint, and would have been obviously caught by even the most casual user.
I could go on, but more examples would obviously get old. And for the record, I obviously have thought about this for many years, even before I posted it.
Judging by your first sentence, you have obviously never used MS software. If anyone actually used it before release, could all those obvious bugs be there?
Ok, I'll ask it. I am not an IT guy. I have no idea why the above post is flaimbait? Is it untrue, it seems to check out with my memory of events. Is it because any non-nix is not allowed to have a good feature on slashdot? Just curious.
Linux, BSD or other may not get as many attacks as windows does even wiht high market share. Karma does catch up with us all. MS has business and ethical practices that frankly, piss a lot of people off. "A wise philospher once said that anger, hate, fear, these are the ways of the dark side, and the dark side makes you strong."
There are lots of huge companies. Even the occasional near monopoly. MS gets hit more than them. What goes around comes around.
Years ago, I read a story in Dragon Magazine called Catacomb, that was quite good, and predicts this sort of game. The story was about a mmrpg where you could turn you loot into real money, and real money, of course, would buy time. Good read if you can get it.
Earlier this week, America was going to lose 50% (IT) of jobs to asia, now we lose 50% of jobs to machine. I think I may want to become an ostrich and find a nice whole....
I am a university professor and often do google searches to find interesting real worl uses of thermodynamics for my class. Over time, I have noticed that google seems to be getting more cluttered, finding more junk. When I first used it, google seemed almost magical in its ability to sort through the chaff. Now, I am not convinced it is much better than the webcrawler and altavistas of old. Is it just me, or is anyone else seen this?

I know, they could take several applications that people on the mac use, like, oh, I don't know, maybe photoshop, mathematica, and maybe even a game like Quake, and run them through some stuff and compare times. Better yet, they could do it side by side with a Dell machine and we can watch it first hand. Wouldn't that be awesome? What? Wait? You mean they did that yesterday already and would know that if you watched the video stream?
Oh, right, it is better to be lazy, and make wild assertions about which benchmark is better and have conspiracy theories about fixing the results. Otherwise, this could be a serious conversation and not slashdot.
No, I am not trolling. I am just annoyed. What else could Apple do? They released benchmarks. They even said the Pentium is even faster in some cases with single processor. Then, they ran comparisons using famous, commonly used programs that are processor intensive. That is fair. God did not say that Intel was always the fastest. Get over it.

Q: Master Yoda, what is the Source?
A: Hrmm, Mysterious is not the source. The source is all around us. It is found in Apples and the Pc's that render the fishes and the trees. The source is especially strong in the Unix, which is known as the light side of the Source. But beware. Fear, Uncertinity, and Doubt. These are the tools of the Darkside....

These tests were conducted in Houston, They forgot the simple truth that everything is bigger in Texas. So, the great-biggest-on-Gods-green-earth-Texas-style foram used in test was probably much too large and tough compared to the wimpy-geriatric-I-am-here-because-I-retired Florida foam. Again, NASA engineers do not get the units right. Sigh.:)

As a nation, America's sins and flaws are openly debated as part of an effort to improve itself. Yet, some view this vehicle to bash and feel smug. What is sad is that when the tables are turned and those nations are coldly evaluated. More often than not, those sins are not talked about or just justified to death. In this case, I ask the question, when was the last time you heard a chinese admit we as a nation screwed up?
A view of recent history has shown that Chinese are not as peaceful as characterized in these forums. in the last 50 years, they have fought wars with the United States, The Soviet Union, and Veitnam among others. In the 1960's, the Sino-Soviet split began becauase Chairman Mao was pressuring Russia to use its nuclear weapons premptively because the communists at that time had a population advantage and would "win" the war. Tiawan and Tibet do not enjoy that warm feeling of security from invasion that Canada does. Should I go on?
The above Korean war history/rationalization is an interesting view, but not entirely acurate. Another view may be that a fledging nation was undergoing hard ship and starvation. What do you do when that happens? You find a scapegoat and wage a nationalistic war to distract. So, about a million mostly unarmed, hungry chinese poor over the border and the Korean war is prolonged. With the aid of Russian airforce and Chinese manpower, the war is fought to a stalemate. McArthur may have wanted to use nukes, but to the credit of America, the fact is The end result? The Chinese regime remained intact bringing sush joy as the cultural revolution to its citizens. North Korea suffers mass starvation as a brutal regime spens precious recources on weapons instead of food.
More could be said, but it's more fun to bash America and not examine other countries' sins, isn't it?
My two cents,

Although American bashing is just too fun for some people, I always wonder when it crosses logical limits. The last century can be completely summed up by western democracies vrs. totalitarian regimes. Bash all you will, but America spread freedom, prosperity, and stability to all it's allies. And the communist/dictators you so gleefully cheer? Ever seen the differences between East/West Germany? North/South Korea? This is not a pretty intellectual theory. This is the reality of people's lives being ruined by what you so cheer. So I ask, do you really want this, or do you just not understand and appreciate what you have?
Well, I just polled the other Americans, and we are ashamed to admit that you are one of us. Feeling's mutal I guess.
