    All of the unemployment numbers have been looking really good lately. According to one theory of the economy, low unemployment (full utilization of labor resources) will lead to inflation. So according to that theory, we should see a huge jump in inflation soon.

    In Silicon Valley there's a noticeable slowdown at 3:00 when the carpool lanes turn on.

    Clearly there are two cases:
    1) HOV lanes slow everyone down because not many people carpool
    2) HOV lanes speed everyone up because they cause people to carpool

    You should be able to calculate a crossover point, where the number of carpoolers is sufficient to overcome the loss of the lane. It's not just total carpoolers, it's the delta.

    What has changed is that the more affordable houses are in areas no one wants to live in.

    Yeah, that is by far the biggest problem, and also one that is fairly easy to solve with a bit of political will.

    America imports a lot of food too. Have you ever eaten a banana? Japan is capable of feeding itself with locally grown food, but the diet will not be so varied (they will have to eat rice, fish, and vegetables).

    if a nation can't feed itself, including energy consumption, it's overpopulated.

    Oh, so by your definition, America is overpopulated, too. Carry on.

    Unlike Japan, the US is not severely overpopulated.

    Japan is not overpopulated. They've made the decision (collectively) to move everyone into cities. The Tokyo-Hiroshima region has a lot of people, but the rest is full of open space.

    Millenials are also skipping traditional adult rites of passage like marriage, house-buying, etc.

    Buying a house is a problem because housing prices have risen too much. "Settling down" (getting married and such) is a lot harder if you don't have a house. When you have a house, you can start getting things you like and have places to put them. If you're planning on moving too much, acquiring assets is a net negative because you have to move them.

    Just need a router with a firewall, a domain, access to a pair of name servers, a static IP address and an outbound SMTP service from your ISP.

    If you have all that, you're better off with qmail tbh

    but securing things properly is a pain.

    If you want, you can have your DNS set up to forward your email to a gmail account. Then in gmail, you can set the "reply-to" email to be your desired email address.

    That is the lazy way to get your own email address, without running your own qmail server (I assume you'd run qmail if you want security).

    Once again, someone finds out the hard way that "the cloud" means "someone else's servers."

    Of course, I don't expect him to run his own mail server. That's a bit of a technical challenge. But I do expect people to continue to suffer from putting their stuff on other people's servers.

    It takes men a significant amount of effort to get a date, but women pretty much just have to say yes and show up.

    Let's be honest, women put a tremendous amount of effort into getting a date, too.
