Sure, it's entirely possible. However, you have to start from the ground up as soon as possible after high school. You'll be doing almost 100% grunt work that any trained monkey can do. Stuff that I personally was doing when I was like thirteen, and I started getting into computers real hardcore fairly late.
Also, while you'll find you probably know a hell of a lot more than people who graduated from college, those people will probably get paid more. Your very best bet would be to get some kind of low-level IT job while going to school. Experience is great, formal education is great, but both combined are excellent.
Vice City's primary impact on me is that now whenever I'm driving and I see a motorcycle, my first impulse is to knock the guy off his bike, shoot him, and steal the vehicle.
Xenogears was just an awesome game that made me think a lot.
Just buy the Tivo. Take the money that you would have poured into building the PC and buy another hard drive for the Tivo.
On a slightly related note, does anyone know of software to control a DSS receiver? I know this must be possible because I've been the first Tivo's were plugged into a DSS receiver and could change channels (though it was laggy).
I'm rather surprised no one mentioned a USB hard drive enclosure along with a laptop (but maybe some one did, I didn't read all the replies because I'd rather do more than that today). It seems to me that one could be insanely useful if your system isn't booting at all for whatever reason.

I'm afraid you fell a little short on this one.
Because...then you'd be...you know...distributing a file in an effective and effecient method...and, uh...we just can't have that!
"I...I must have gotten a decimal point in the wrong place! I always mess up some mundane detail like that!"
you want a reason? e-penis++

Ok, and what the hell does that have to do with anything?
Isn't it interesting how the reviewer's only performance information source is Nero?
