So someone made a crappy version of Tivo? Why is that exciting? I have a crappy "Tivo" on my desk right now. It's called a vcr, and my vcr is still superior to Mystro because I choose what I can put on tape and what to do with the tape once I have it.

Well, I guess I could mail my cassettes to the cable company after recording them. Then I'll have my own Mystro.

  2. I'm an Artist on Are Programmers Engineers? · · Score: 1

There are two main approaches to programming, and I know people who do both.

I personally think of myself as an artist. I think the way to learn to program is similar to the one should learn art. This is by studying great pieces of code, and writing as much code as possible.

The other side of the coin is engineering. I have to take tons of engineering classes in school, and or CIS department is part of the college of engineering. So I also feel that if I take all these engineering classes (and pass) it is unfair to not call me an engineer, when I have done all of the work other engineers do.

Actually as the world becomes more "connected" and we have more communication across cultural and geographical boundaries, this would be less and less of a problem.

I am sure you can find many Japanese kids who can understand ebonics (something many adults in the United States can't do). As time passes cultural boundares will come closer together. Eventually all we'll have is generation gaps. Those however will become larger as life expectancy is increased by advances in medical technology.

That is what was unfair. Chances are if the Great Brittain would have wisened up and given us Parliamentarians, we would not exist today as the U.S.A. That said, am glad they didn't.

  8. A Lot of Thought on Strike on Iraq · · Score: 0, Troll

This will be at the bottom, but oh well:

I have put a lot of thought into this war. A lot of people in this country think we should go to war. I can't say whether we should or shouldn't, but I can say that wholeheartedly disagree with the idea of a "pre-emptive strike". There is nothing wrong with defending yourself or defending someone else, but attacking out of fear is not to be allowed. However, there is more to this war than that.

I started out firmly against this war, but after examining the facts, I believe it is a GOOD IDEA. Not because of any pre-emptive strike, but because I believe the Iraqi people could end up better off in the end. I was all out against war, until I read an interview with a guy whose wife was from Iraq. He was talking about how her family is still there and how awful it is. Everyone hates the regime, nobody can change it. Someone will make a comment at a dinner meeting one night, and be gone the next day. Udai runs wild in Baghdad doing what he pleases, raping both men and women, cutting the heads off of prostitutes, etc. If this war ends the regime this is good.

Typically I do not believe in "the ends justifies the means". However, I think that if this frees the Iraqi people, if it is good for them, I am for it. We will not know until the war is over if that is true, but what could be worse than the current situation?

Wow, you define compression and prove you don't know anything about it in the same sentence! Don't get made, I'm just kidding with you. Anyways, lossy compression does is, effectively, dropping kbps, but there is plenty of lossless compression happening in there too. I am not sure what kind of compressions scheme ATRAC uses, but I imagine there is some run length coding, discrete cosine transforms, and a variety of other methods happening before you get to your final product.

These lossless compressions get the file size down as low as possible before you have to start chopping out information. In this manner you preserve as much of the actual signal as possible.

Now, it is all good and well for Blizzard to want to stop piracy, it isn't all good and well to trample other people's rights to do it. bnetd IS NOT a copyright circumvention tool. It is a way for people to play blizzard games on their own terms. I love blizzard games, but I won't make excuses for such low behavior.
