I don't remember when this was introduced, but more then 15 years ago. Regarding your loop hole, companies like that don't live long and I never hear of anyone trying. Oh and a small flyer is not a newspaper, we talk about real newspaper, magazines are not allowed to be sold in this way.

In Denmark the only thing telemarketers is allowed to sell is newspapers. Trying to sell anything else is illegal. You can also require telemarketers to add you to their "Do-No-Call" list.

Instead of creating a "Do-Not-Call Registry" I would suggest the US to make a law to prohibit sells people to contact you unless you say otherwise, just like in Denmark (as I said newspapers is the only exception). And yes that actually does make spam illegal.

  3. Re:XP is a manager's dream on Extreme Programming for Web Projects · · Score: 2, Insightful

Actually managers hate XP. Time planning in XP is much harder than with traditional software development. In XP you can't say "We're done implementing in 4 months" Managers like development that follow the waterfall model, simply because time managing it more clear. Except form that fact that you only need half the PC's, there are no real cost cutting, not in larger projects at least.

Blindly following XP for every project you do is a bad idea. XP bad choise for many projects. Read "Extreme Programming Explained" and you will see that Kent Beck agrees. Also never comment on the glory of XP without knowing other software development technics.

The SQLSlammer shows that this could have been avoided if administrators have install patch made available last summer. If you know that your system is vulnerable and do nothing aren't you to blame for it ? If you run any server on the internet you should read service updates for your software, if not you should be hold responsable when something goes wrong because of it.

Perhaps we should allow CERT to have a small army or something.

  7. MPlayer binaries suck on MPlayer Licence Trouble With A Twist · · Score: 1

The real reason for not distributing mplayer binaries is performance. I tried using an MPlayer compiled for at different cpu than my own (running i386 on a i586) and I could really feel the difference in speed. If they want precompiled they will need a i386, i486, i586, i686, Athlon... and so on. Otherwise the users doesn't get the perfomance boost that the instructions in these cpu will give you. Also they need to distribute the different modules for videocards. My computer only handles mplayer well with the mga_vid module installed. Distributing binaries will just be to much work anyway so they should just drop it.

Why don't they just distribute mplayer like they do with Qmail, Ezmlm and other Bernstein programs ? Seems to work just fine. Although I hate that they start qmail without the use of supervise. (/service)

  8. Why upgrade on Microsoft Loses Showdown in Houston · · Score: 1

They say that one reason for choosing SimDesk is that upgrading Office 97 and 2000 to OfficeXP would requirer higher-powered PCs. That's most likely true, but why upgrade if the older versions fit your needs. I mean there aren't any features in OfficeXP that you just can't live without.

This seems to be one of Microsofts greates problems regarding Office. They keep pushing new version, but there are no new features that people really need. Most Office users don't even use half the features. There are no reason for updating perfectly good software just to get features you don't need.

Of cause if Microsoft changes the fileformat in Word or Excel in every version, you will need everyone in the office to run the same version and you can't buy Office 97 anymore. Upgrading all those licences will of cause be expensive. Still I don't see what new features in Office justify the need for a faster computer.

I don't get why people are against unique identifying numbers. I live in Denmark and was given a CPR number (equivalent to SSN) right after birth. Try moving to Denmark and live without one, you can't do anyting without it. No bank will create an account for you, no library card, no drivers license, no doctor, no school, you get the idea. The laws surrounding the use of the CPR number is very strict, meaning that you can't cross reference different databases. Trust me noone in Denmark feel that having their CPR number is a bad idea. My privacy is not violated because of it.

However I would hate using my CPR as a phonenumber, I hate phones and preferrer that people don't call me and I almost never call anyone. But you really need a phone in this world (at least in large parts of the world). Perhaps that's the solution, restrict what you can use a phone for, like emergency only or private phonecall only. (The last one is because I had to call a company who didn't answer email, the funny part is that the company sells webhosting. An Internet company that doesn't answer emails is just stupid)

If however the installation is a bit more complicated moving on won't seem that hard later on.

That said, I have seen people install Mandrake an dropping Windows completly later on.
