  1. Re:CyberBS . . . on The End of Cyber BS · · Score: 1

Agreed. There has been no fundamental "paradigm shift" in the way we live or conduct our business. The internet has broken down time and distance but no more. Don't get me wrong the internet has been a huge enabler and me and my music collection could not live with out it. However, remember Sept 11th and the rush for news. The internet could not handle the volumes and people turned to the traditional mediums of TV and radio instead. Until the internet is able to cope with demand at all times and moves from a 'pull' mechanism to a 'push' mechanism I cannot see this changing.

  2. What no PERL ? on Professional Linux Programming · · Score: 0, Offtopic

How can a book like this ignore Perl the "swiss army pen knife" for most linux programmers and admin people?
I'm always tempted when books like this come along but no perl = no buy. Though I suppose you could argue that there are so many online resources for Perl that this would be redundant.

  3. Re:Ladies and Gentlemen... on Amazon Makes a Profit · · Score: 2, Insightful

Agreed this is good news and needs to be communicated as such. A business with a sound business case and strategy will prosper. This is true irrespective of been a dot-com or not.
Hopefully we will now see the VC's been prepared to fund new start-up's which:
a: Have a real/realistic business case for generating revenue and growth.
b: That have realistic timescales to achive these targets.
Slowly, just slowly I believe that we are emerging from the dot-com mania fall out and returning to a more ratonal age for the perception of web based business based on business fundamentals.

  4. Re:A matter of trust on USA Busted Trying to Bug China's Presidential 767 · · Score: 2, Insightful

Maybe I'm getting more cynical as I get older but spying is just a fact of life. The US spies on even its friends in Europe and the Europeans are happy to return the favour. Even as individuals we are guilty of the same impulse to watch our neighbours simply out of curiousity. Spying is, and always will be, a fact of life and frankly I'm surprised that the Chinese expected anything less. The only way that this could have been avoided would have been to make it explicit in the contact that once the aircraft was delivered it would be stripped down to search for such devices.

  5. Software as a service on Corporate America Wary of Subscription Software · · Score: 2, Interesting

At the moment with the economy on a backstep Microsoft has chosen the wromg time to start the push to subscription based software. It does not need a PHD to work out that the fundamental reason for this is to increase the revenue stream from its users. (There is a nice analogy here with pushers and drug users here but i'll leave it for now)
However, there is a major bonus for the open source movement as commercial interests are now looking to reduce their exposure to MS. Consequently, Linux is gaining more credibility as an alterantive O/S within the mainstream business markets.
Frankly, I'm all for MS pushing the subscription based model as hard and as fast as possible but I don't own any MS stock and I do care about the open source movement.

  6. Re:Nice Stuff... on New iMac Announced · · Score: 1

I suppose it all depends on how you define "groundbreaking". If these products were from the rest of the PC industry e.g. Dell they would be groundbreaking products. Appple are so far ahead of the game in terms of design that we become a little blase with these sort of anouncements. What we see today from Apple will be followed up by the rest of the industry in its trail.
