Serial Experiments Lain taught me two things.

    1) IPv6 is not going to last forever.
    2) The internet is connected to the rest of the world.

That is, even though this doesn't directly affect the internet, in the long term it does, because if Lucasfilms can get away with this offline, they can get away with it online too.

  2. Re:A city is a business. on Persuading A City To Go Wireless? · · Score: 2, Interesting

A city is not a business. The goal of a business is to make money. The goal of a government is to serve the people. (Of course, in practice the government might acquire greedy people who wish to control the government for their own personal profits, but that's not what's supposed to happen.)

As a result, businesses will try to have their profit margins as large as possible, whereas governments should not, because serving the people is their end goal, not making money off of their services.

No, Go requires just as much logic and just as much knowledge of prior games. Heck, there's even a name for when there's a series of moves which are expected to be played in certain kinds of situations. (Joseki.) Yes, there's a certain amount of "intuition," (although it's discouraged) but that's just because Go's format makes it a lot easier for people to analyzing using their graphical pattern recognition.

You have to remember that space elevators are mostly supported from the top, not the bottom. Don't imagine a tower which goes up to the heavens, imagine a rope hanging from a sattelite.

No, morality is, in its simplest possible state, a map to the reals. (Although I suspect the math gets even more complicated than that.) Every action has a certain degree of goodness to it. For example, stealing is bad, but it's better than murder. So if stealing can prevent a murder, you should do so.

Boolean rule-based morality is useful because it's very easy to understand and spread to others (memes) but I don't think it's the true nature of right and wrong.
