Look, the poster isn't the greatest .NET programmer out there (Plenty of built in stuff for encryption in .NET), but come on. A two byte substitution cipher? All you have to do is put down a packet analyzer, have the application "retrieve" the system password and there you go. Its just kept in the freaking tables and I doubt businesses use ssl on their lan.

But that's not the biggest pet peve. WHY AREN'T YOU USING AD? You know, the 20+ years of authentication system that just works?

After reading all the information from BengalsUF, I can honestly say I would reach the same concision. There are many, rational, methods he could of given access to the routers, but he didn't. But to be honest, if he was rational, he might never of been reassigned in the first place.

The example you cite above can't be used because its not absolutely clear she has the password AND that she knows this is an authorized person to give it to. (That was the main crux of the Terry case, as I have read) There is no way to prove she was preventing an authorized user from accessing the system as she, herself is not one.

The problem is wither this case will be used in a more ambiguous incident. Lets say Bob gets hit by a bus, but recovers but has partial amnesia. He doesn't want to lose his job, so he doesn't tell anyone he have forgot all the recovery/console passwords. A year later is told that he needs to give the company the passwords as he is being reassigned. Unlike the Terry case, there are ways to non-destructively recover the passwords but the company can easily press charges BECAUSE the Terry case was successful.

I believe the law AND justice was applied correctly to Terry Child's. However, the problem is everyone thinks law and justice should be EVENLY applied in all circumstances, especially recently. Even the Supreme Court has been doing very VERY narrow definitions, I believe more to avoid this kind go generalizing rather than partition politics.

Even if the "people" are on his side, its going to be hard to argue in a democracy he shouldn't be punished.

Also, he has to have some strong ethical guidelines here. Joker gets away with murder because he knows Batman cannot kill him. Batman goes to great lengths to make sure he doesn't kill anyone no matter what they have done. What does this guy have? Will he release these bankers home address? How about personal information about them? Lets say there IS outright bribery and he shows it by getting the bankers personal account number and information. The whole balancing act all mmorgs have is to show how important you are make 1000+ players feel the same way. There was just nothing "different" about any of the other players. It was like being part of those improve local theater where your hand was held to where you needed to go and you solve some puzzles. Puzzles, I might add, could be solved by yourself. Hell, it started to become like highschool. Eveyone had their own cliche, people judged you on how much of the content you completed. Not to say everyone wasn't nice about it, but its the same kind of ribbing death knights get in Wow that bothers me in the back of the mind.

I am not saying it wasn't fun at some parts though. When the servers started dieing, there might only be 8-9 people online for the show and it REALLY shinned then. The puzzles were really good, but never really justified the amount of people online.

However, there is NO way a "community" driven game like this is going to work without some basic planning. If you want examples, where are all the "great" maps for the Half Life engine? I have been learning the hammer tool and its SO easy to create even a CS map. Even one for TF2 isn't that much harder. Where is all the mods for Quake 4 now? There are a number of excellent UT2004 mods out there just dead because no one cares anymore. That's the issue with Uru. After the initial excitement wears off, it will take a SERIOUSLY dedicated group of fans to keep the game going. Putting in a new GOOD puzzle evey week. Giving a new story line. Building new textures and models.

Hell, the reason so many people do these things in SL is because of money. Is there any plans for Cyan's 2 man team to implement that kind of system?

See this is a simple fix, you don't even need a whole public encryption thing for a simple pin verify process.

If you want to eliminate the man in the middle, just encrypt entire packet with a predetermined seed+pin containing some random data. It decrypts it and sends back the random data xored with a random seed. The terminal now has a way to send a single message to the card that can't be intercepted. If ithe pin was bad (sends trash) the card ticks it off as a use. If the pin was good, the message is clear to the card that it was verified and it doesn't tick it as a bad pin. This makes it so that if someone is just sending garbage to the card to break it, it will lock itself and it eliminates the man in the middle operation for the card.

This is only for the communication for the card though. A hacked terminal at a gas station would be much easier to steal pins.
