    Im here in San Jose at the NYLF conference. The head of the NASA AIMS center talked about that yesterday. It was pretty impressive. All the stuff there doing is pretty impressive. Within the next week I am going there so I may be able to see it. Maybe even setup an SSH server hehehe.

  2. Spying on Should Colleges Monitor Students' PCs? · · Score: 1

    While you are 100% correct on your statement what about the fact the school will be able to spy on what ever the students are doing. Look at there files, delete files they dont like fully control the computer. My school would not let me use my laptop on there network because they could not spy on me. The tech people in schools really have no idea what they are doing this is just going to bring more problems on with privacy and as you said someone taking over the central server. Note: now that I think about it they would probably use novell which is very easy to hack and take down, just google it.

    Well it came out in 91. Then I was 3 so I could actually interact with a machine. Before that I was just banging on the keyboard in DOS. Yes I guess you could say the first OS I used was DOS but I had no idea what I was doing. I didnt really interact with a computer untill 91 when linux did first come out.

  4. Computer Consultant on How To Avoid Viruses At Windows Install Time? · · Score: 1

    As my part time high school job I am a computer consultant. I have been using linux since it came out(its what my dad used so I started to use it). I fix win machine but this does including rebuilding them sometimes as well. I have that win CD with all the updates from feb but you do not need it. I start the same way you do disconnecting the machine and then formatting the drive and installing. I then have Win XP Service Pack 1 on a disc(you can find it for free to download somewere on their site) I then put that patch on(it can take awhile) then I would setup norton antivirus and firewall. Put it on the net(dont use the software the isp gives you they always suck just use the default win way). Once you have fully updated norton. Then you can finish all the updates on the win site. KEEP THE FIREWALL ON!!! I have no idea why your turned it off but you dont need to. Also a router can help with extra security(because of NAT) so if your real worried get a router(you can get an 802.11b router for $50 at staples.)

    27 peices of spyware on the average computer? I do computer maintance as a part time job. Thats the very least people have. Usally its around 200, ive seen it go up to 1500. This bill will do about as much as the can spam act. The best way for people to combat spyware is to go mozilla at the least, dumping win would be the best way.

  6. Truely optimized c++ code on Java Faster Than C++? · · Score: 1

    As a gentoo user, C++ and Java programmer I was very interested in this. I noticed one thing though, this "optimized C++ compile command" was only a generic i386/i686 command. I reran the tests with the optimized compile command I use as my CFLAG g++ in.cpp -march=pentium4 -O3 -pipe -fomit-frame-pointer -o out. After doing this I got C++ to come out faster 75% of the time. Probably if I played with the code and optimized the C++ code as well I could get it to run faster. I emailed the author my complete results. If you would like to see them just reply here with your e-mail.

    Its just annoying when they do things like that. They also ask you a bunch of stupid questions and make you test everything they can think of even though I know all this stuff. They made me goto every phone jack in the house and test it. It also kina sux when they tell you to do something that is win spec and your on linux, then they keep telling you to do it even though you've told them 50 times your on linux and you cannt do that. I just think that DSL has horrible support, when we first got cable(when it first came out in NJ) we couldn't connect. My dad called the company and they came two days later and fixed it, its worked ever since.

  8. DSL on 200mbps DSL On Its Way? · · Score: 1

    I build networks as a part time job, everytime there is a problem with DSL(and the office is in my town) it either dosnt get fixed and the people just end up with cable or it takes weeks to fix. My grandparents were going to get DSL but AT&T sent out a guy to look at there house he said it was the lines from the office to there house and then AT&T said they had to send another before they could even start the paper work for someone to look at the lines. We just gave up and went with cable and have been happy ever since. If this is the kind of tech support DSL is going to continue to have DSL is going to go away, at least in the US.

    I took the exam though because of all these papers I had to sign saying how I cannt talk about the specs of the test I can say how it was generally. I should probably start out by saying Ive been on computers all my life(mainly using linux), my dad started me out and I have been coding since the age of 7 or so starting with simple HTML learning C, C++, a little bit of IA-32 ASM, VB(I needed it for a job), and Java. I started Java out a little bit on my own. The way my school has it set up you have to take an intro course and then the AP class. I was lucky to get into the intro class freshman year since you have to be in Algerbra 2/Trig to get in. I really took the class just for my college application. The class was pretty easy we followed a work book given to us by the college board it went through all the easy stuff if statements loops objects memory sorting and searching ect... I though as well as my class mates that we were well prepared for the test everything but one question was covered. The free response was pretty easy and most of the time I at least was checking for typos. I think I got a 5(the highest grade you can get on it) but only time will tell(we get the results the 3rd week of July). It was a four hour test(from walking in to the class to walking out) and while it required alot of brain power I though I was prepared. The only thing I really didnt like about it was the fish case study and that was because I dont like working with programs I didnt write and if I have to I like to have the full source, not just memorize a bunch of methods and what they do.

But then agien these are the people who said no games so I hid the dir and they still havnt found it.
