  1. ASUS RT-N66U on Ask Slashdot: DD-WRT Upgrade To 802.11n? · · Score: 1

I asked this question awhile ago and after doing a bunch of research I've decided to wait for the ASUS RT-N66U which should be coming out in the next few weeks. Its gigabit with 802.11N dual channel and two USB ports. It has a 600Mhz Broadcom chip and 256M of RAM. While googling around for it I've seen a couple of references in Tomato and OpenWRT to them adding code for it so I assume it will be supported, most other ASUS routers are.

OpenWRT is more for long term. Most manufactures stop updating a products firmware with new features once they stop selling it. OpenWRT gives me the flexibility to continue to get new features and fixes.

Since I'm going to be in a very huge apartment building I'd like to be able to do most of my wireless over 5Ghz so I don't get interference with anyone else. I was also looking at the ASUS RT-N56U which has everything I want but theres no OpenWRT support. Apparently its possible but I don't have the time to port it myself.http://ask.slashdot.org/story/11/09/19/0315258/Ask-Slashdot-Good-Gigabit-80211N-Home-Router#

  7. Really hard on The Ugly State of ARM Support On Linux · · Score: 1

I worked with Marvell extensively in Linux and while it was good all driver support was in their own patch which seemed to not integrate well with the kernel. Parts of it conflicted so I had to ensure certain standard features were turned off. Even userland tools were changed. I had to use a custom version of U-Boot tools. It was a mess. What they don't understand is that they end up spending more time maintaining their patches then just getting them right and submitting them upstream.

I second this mainly because it sounds like you don't have much experience in setting up a cluster. By using RHEL you get tech support which may help when your stuck. If your company doesn't want to pay for it CentOS is good because I beleive you can just pay for RHEL support and Redhat will support it.

Yes it is a big bug(I use Linux on my laptop and phone so I'm effected as well) but alot of people are also not effected. Its unfair to hold them back because a subset(even though it may be large) of users are effected by a bug. There is no requirement to upgrade either, they can just stay at an older version.

A show stopping bug must effect everyone at at least the majority. This bug does not. It does not limit the functioning of the kernel as a whole on any system(including mobile devices). The only thing it effects is power usage.

  12. Re:Major power consumption: an overlooked issue on Linux 2.6.39 Released · · Score: 4, Interesting

The bug will be fixed but its a very very complicated bug. All that is known is that somewhere between 2.6.37 and 2.6.38 some patch or patches caused the kernel to increase machine power usage. Finding the patch or patches that caused this is very difficult and thats just finding the bug. It then has to be debugged and fixed. One bug can't be a show stopper for everything else. Just give them some time.

Thats true but I wouldn't be putting pressure on Foxconn, MSI, or any other ODM builders its really who your buying from. HP, Dell, Acer, etc are the ones who really make the calls. They go with the BIOS because thats what Windows works with best and its whats known. What coreboot needs to do is support Windows well and do something the BIOS/EFI doesn't that consumers really want. Faster boot time is really nice and is something that could give them that however they still need to catch up with a graphical interface.

Even today this comes up, I've seen people not understand that Office 2007 won't work with Windows 98. All they saw on the box was that "Windows" was supported. I know IPv4 address are running out but are mobile phones really the reason? If every company is like Verizon(and I would assume at least a few other are) that means only one Internet IPv4 address per tower. Meaning one address could be serving thousands.
