  1. We want Java Free as in Freedom on Sun Says Java Source Already Available · · Score: 1

I think the big mistake Sun has is that it is confusing what people mean by open source. When someone says open source they mean not only is the code fully open source but you can change it, redistribute it, and even submit patches to Sun. If you look at http://www.sun.com/software/communitysource/j2se/j ava2/download.xml you will see a few files for the Java souce code. One is simple labeled "JSCSL Source" but another is labeled "SCSL Binaries - needed to complete source build" so Java isnt fully open source. The first thing they need to do is make it so I can download just the source, with no binaries, and compile it on any OS/arch mixure I want. The second thing they need to do is change the license just a bit so that I can redistribute the source code on my own. I think most people would be fine with Sun making their own license that says you must say it isnt the offical Sun Java if you choose to redistribute it. I think right now Sun's big problem is that they dont want something stupid that you do effect Java's reputation.

I am fine with my ISP throttling my p2p network traffic its when they throttle everything perminatly that it annoys the hell out of me. If you download from my ISP(optonline) they will throttle every from Bittorrent to HTTP connection, slowing everything down. This happens if I download once from any p2p software. This happened to me when I downloaded knoppix 4.0 from bittorrent and an admin came on saying that if I downloaded again I would be kicked off. Why is it that an ISP has to punish you perminatly for downloading once? Why cannt the throttling just be on the p2p stuff, not everything. I understand that your ISP has in the contract info about p2p software, mine dosnt they just classify it as running a server, how does that make sense when im basicly downing the same thing running any sort of game? As many other have pointed out my ISP adverties all the time that you can "download movies music and games faster then DSL" when infact my gf(who has DSL) now downloads faster with bittorrent.

About 6 months ago our internet was really slow for about a week so we called them and an admin was put on the phone. He told us that running any p2p software is considered running a server which violates there terms of use. He told us the next time we run any p2p software we will be kicked off there service with no warning. We pay for a service and the ISPs seem to only let you do what they want you to. I know many people who actually are using more bandwith since they discovered newgroups so really the ISPs are going to lose either way.

I did all my development on Linux but I was about to sit down at a windows machine open up MS C++ 6.0 and compile it with no problem. The only reason why I brought up the Intel Mac is because some games use asm in their code. It is really that Linux gamers offer Blizzard very little. Linux gamers generally dual boot or emulate, so they are already customers. Offering a Linux version would generally not produce a new sale, it would replace a Windows sale with a Linux sale, there is no new money to pay for development and QA costs. Isnt that the same for the new Intel Macs? I thought all Intel Macs could run PPC apps fine(via emulation). Someone will soon port wine to Intel Mac, I woudlnt be surprised if transgaming releases cedega for Intel Mac, they could use that. Also apple has said that they are doing nothing to prevent Windows from being run on their machines so once M$ makes Windows XP work with the Macs(and im pretty sure they will quite soon) why not just tell the new Intel Mac users to dual boot with Windows?
